Sony 90mm Macro lens - Is this sharp?

Dear all,

Just had my new Sony 90mm lens delivered. So far, the images look good, i'm comparing this to my Sigma 150mm which was super sharp wide open.

Do you think these (wide open) look ok. If not, I'll ask for a replacement. I don't make a habit of taking photos of brick walls, but with all my new lenses, this is how I test sharpness. My thoughts are that the lower left and right are not that sharp, with the left being worse than the right.

Are you certain you were exactly square on to the wall - ie might the less sharp areas be slightly out of the plane of focus (which is presumable quite shallow) ?

I have one which I am very happy with but I've never tested it in this way to be honest so who knows!

Yes. Moving up to f4 everything sharpened up nicely.

Right, but that would happen anyway if you weren’t completely square as the DOF increases, no?

If you’re not happy, ask for a replacement. It should be sharp.

- have a look at this from about 3:30... should be sharp across the frame even at f2.8

So maybe retry the test and if still soft on the corners then return ?
