I am using a Sandisk 4GB Extreme 111 in a Sony A 55 & after a few photo's it stops taking any more until it has written to the card. I don't have review on. Any way of speeding up the A 55?

what is "a few"?
The specs. for the A55 say that the buffer can store up to 35 frames (JPEG Fine), 39 frames (JPEG Standard), 20 frames (RAW) and 20 frames (RAW+JPEG).

The red arrows were landing at Bournemouth airport. They come in one at a time roughly 15 seconds between each one & there are 11 of them. I try to take 3 or 4 photo's of each one, in various places of decent, but towards the end it stopped taking photos & I missed some. I have taken the Red Arrows landing many times with a Canon EOS 400D & a Nikon D90 & never had this problem before. I would have thought that a camera with the capability of 10 fps would have a better buffer, unless it needs a faster card?
 
Card writing speed would be more critical with a camera that can do 40 or so in a hit. At 10 fps that is 4 seconds worth so....If you have raw + jpg or raw then you'll only get 2 seconds worth and with 10 fps you'd take a lot more than you'd think.

If there is a slightly slower shotgun mode, try that. Might be more reliable.

I don't shoot planes at 10fps, thats for the birds. I was only stating that if a camera is capable of shooting at 10fps it should have a better buffer. So basically a faster card, if it exists, won't help? I am using an SD card would the Sony card be faster?
 
A faster card will help as there will be less time needed to write to the card between bursts until the point where the camera itself reaches its maximum write speed. Beyond that a faster card won't help. Also if the card is faster it can write more images as it goes so it is less likely the buffer will fill in the first place.

I don't know about memory stick duo writing speeds so I wouldn't know. I'd probably contact sony as they'd probably be able to say which would be better. And there could easily be a firmware update available which might help as being a recent camera there are bound to be issues.
 
The Sony A55 actually has one of the largest buffers ever fitted to a DSLR, you shouldn't be getting this problem with ANY card, fast or slow.

Do you have any processor intensive settings active? Such as highlight control, high noise control settings etc etc? These are the only things that might effect shooting / write speeds but I'm inclined to think there may be a fault somewhere...

Out of interest, what "class" is the card rated at? I wouldn't use anything lower than a class 10 card for fast burst rate on the A55.
