hey people just wondered if anyone could give me any advice re this. I have hit a brick wall with it. Perhaps the answers is, "you cant do it with that kit", but i figured id ask anyway.

I have a sony a450 and i have never tried to use flash. I dont like it so much but maybe thats because i dont know how to use it properly, hence why im trying.

when i attach a flash gun to the hot shoe of my camera, in fact even when i pop up the camera flash, the shutter speed will not go any higher than 1/160th ????

ive tried in all the modes and i cant seem to change it. This works fine in doors but i was told to try some flash when doing some outdoor portraits and all im getting is a really over exposed image. i can change the F stop i know, but then everything is in focus and i cant get the bokeh....#

Any help would be great, if anyone knows that is.

Which flash? Using fill flash setting when outside? Try using flash compensation and play around with that (tis in the manual) or exposure comp? 1/160 is the flash sync although it can be higher if you can use HSS (in the manual).
 
i tried rear/slow and fill and didnt get anywhere. TBH i didnt try the flash compensation so will give that a go. Just bin reading the manual so will look for HSS as ive not seen that. Thank you
 
thanks you ive checked and it would appear your right. Dont think the flash compensation will make much of a difference and it would seem i need the Sony HVL flash to use the HSS.

A Minolta 3600(D) or 5600(D) would also allow HSS.
 
The jessops standard bounce flash also supports HSS. 360AFD is the model number I think.
 
Oh. Saw the HSS logo flash up when I was playing with wireless flash and the results seemed ok. Isn't an option when it is mounted on the hotshoe so you could be right and I'm dim :)
