Sony A55 Auto Focus not working??

Got the Sony A55 today & even with spot focus it won't focus. If I focus it manually, it takes a nice picture but if I put it into auto focus the motor puts it out of focus a little. Contacted Sony who say a possible laser fault. Any suggestions before I send it back?
 
Spot focus is more unreliable as it tries to focus on a tiny area. Try either local with the centre spot or let it choose the focus point in an auto mode. If it is still struggling and it's not in a low light situation then it's duff if it does it with more than one lens. Does it do the same via liveview and the EVF? I assume you're not using an older sigma lens with it as they and the slts don't mix without modification from sigma.

I'd probably send it straight back if it were me. If it is that dicky brand new then it'll only get worse!
 
If you've tried all modes and settings both on lens, in-camera AND checked the M/A/C mode dial (I assume your camera has one) that it hasn't inadvertantly been adjusted to MF, thus no AF, then it'll have to go back. What lens is being used and is this happenening to all lenses mounted? Need to rule out a potential lens fault.

Try it with other lenses, if you have them. I bought an a55 yesterday and was horrified at the back-focussing evident after my first walkabout shoot with my 50/1.4. Spent this afternoon testing all my lenses and fortunately most are as good or better than they were on the a350 that the 55 replaced.

If it's the only lens you have, take it back for sure. You may have Friday camera, so it might be best to get it changed while you still can.
 
take it back if bought locally, ask to try another kit lens, would help to ascertain if the lens or camera is at fault
