Yes
Just taken delivery of a Sony a57, but I can't see anything through the viewfinder.

I've read the manual and tried all the settings, but can't get it working.

Am I missing anything obvious?

lens cap? thats obvious.

read the manual dude it WILL be in there, read it again.

Is battery well charged?

Check the eye start feature if it has one. Sometimes if that isn't working or if there is some packing tape or similar over the sensors then it doesn't work.

If you half press the shutter does it come into life?

Does the rear screen work normally with liveview and take photos?

Lens cap definitely off. Haha
I'll check manual again but it's looking like its faulty. Or something went wrong during firmware update.

Yep, battery at 100%.
I'll check packaging but I can't see anything in the way.
Doesn't come to life with shutter press.
And yes, rear screen works fine and takes pictures ok.

If the liveview/evf switch is on evf then it should come alive at least when you half press the shutter. I'd start to think it was faulty.... if there is a 'reset to manufacturer default' option in the menu I'd try that as well just in case it's got confused during transit.

Done a reset. Nothing.

Emailed the seller, lets see what they say.

Real bummer is I sent the receipt and warranty document off to Sony for my cash back! Luckily I took photocopies though.

New camera came this morning. Worked fine straight out the box.

I'm wondering if the faulty one was a return. The battery was fully charged out the box and the charger cable lead wasn't cable tied as neatly as this new one (which had no battery charge).

Ah well, happy ending for me. Now to get out and use it! :-)

Cardiff Camera Centre.

I've used them in the past with no problems.

I know it's mail order and all that, it's just a shame I'm £10 out of pocket after having to return it. And no real apology either.

You shouldn't be out of pocket if it was faulty! Remind them of their duties under SOGA/DSR. Returns of faulty goods should be refunded! It's a high value item so can't have gone normal postage routes.
