Sony a65 or a77

I am interested in upgrading my a700 to a newer body and was looking at the Sony a65 & a77, both have 24 mega pixels and vary a lot in price

I think the a65 fits the bill, my question being is the a77 so far superior as to justify it £1000 price tag ( body only) against the much cheaper a65 at around £700 body only

I'd get the A77... lots more cross type focus points, faster fps, weather sealed and better dynamic range than the A65. I think the above justifies the extra £300 or so :)

It's the one I'd get to replace the A580...

A77 also has AF Micro Adjust, flash synch 1/250 (1/200 with sss) rather than 1/160, PC Sync for external flash, 1/8000 max shutter (rather than 1/4000).

If you've can afford the extra, it's worth doing.

(or alternatively, look for a nice deal on a s/h A900 for similar cash - it's not got the 'gadget' factor of the A77, but oozes FF goodness :love:)

Not if you can live with jpegs and have the opportunity to use MFNR ! It is probably 5D2-like under such circumstances.

Just a thought.

I can't live with jpegs unfortunately as I only edit in RAW and it really does produce very noisy images which of course you can clean up with a bit of NR, but you will lose clarity from doing so and for me that just one of the reasons why I had to sell it in the end...

Other than that though, it really is an amazing camera... especially for video!

Gotta agree with you above if you shoot exclusively RAW.

I used a 5D2 (and 40D/1DIII/1DsII/1DsIII/5Dc/60D/7D) for the past few years and regard the 5D2 as the high iso king. Have not seen many 5D3 images which have bowled me over yet though, OOI !

I have to say I prefer the EVF over OVF and the AF ability of the a77 over 5D2 though.

Both are great bodies, of course. Depends really on your requirements.

oh absolutely, I went to the a77 from a D700, so AF was just as superb as the nikon and then going to a 5d mk2 is like going backwards... the AF on the 5D is pretty crap in comparison, but then I shoot still subjects mostly so I wasn't that bothered.

And on the EVF, hell yeah! the EVF on the A77 is amazing, and I would love to have the same one on the 5d, but hey, we can't have everything ;)

Don't get me wrong, I loved my A77 and shot some belting images with it, but its no D700 or 5Dmk2.... but then, it was never going to be ;)
 
Finger crossed that the much-rumoured a99 WILL be a 5D2 or D700 (or even d800 since it might well have the same sensor ?) competitor. I'm banking on it being a 24MP high iso machine for wedding work.

We shall see ?
 
IQ wise the a77 and a65 are the same, so it's mainly a question of ergonomics. Coming from an a700, the two control wheels of the a77 might be important.

If you're happy to move to a one wheel body, then I'd recommend including the a57 in your shortlist. The 16mb sensor is slightly better at higher ISOs than the 24mp.
 
Thanks guys I didnt even consider the a57

I'll have a look - I do shoot at high end iso using the 150-500mm- so whatever body I choose must be able to cope well at high end iso 800+

so maybe Im looking at the wrong bodies????

I've recently had extended trials of the a57, a77 and NEX 7 at the Sony World Photography bash at Somerset House. I was planning on getting an a77, but the noise above ISO 800 put me off a bit. I wasn't much interested in the a57 (as I already have an a55) but was surprised how much better the new model handles and performs compared to its predecessor.
 
Interesting, so you are saying the a57 copes better with higher iso than the a65/a77?

just looking to replace my a700 body which was bought in a rush to replace a trashed a580, which coped very well with high end iso

You could pop over to dpreview to check out the comparison tool which uses a standard scene and lots of bodies at different iso's and using RAW and jpeg data.

The a57 is noticable less noisy at high iso than a77; I guestimate at least a stop better.

Having spent a little time on the comparison tool- would seem that the a57 withn 16.1 meg pixels handles iso above 400 better that the larger 24 meg pixels found in the a65/a77

Look like Ive found the body I want, an a57 a snip at £648 from amazon :thumbs:

Oooh. I look forward to seeing your results with that A57. Low high iso noise is essential with an SLT or it will feel like a step back.

Best price I've seen, without resorting to grey imports, is £599 for body only at Bristol cameras.

I thought the 57 EVF wasn't the same quality as the on in the 65/77 though ?
 
Had a little play on the comparison tool, though not sure just how accurate this is?!

The a65 does seem a very good image. I compared it to the D7000 which I am looking to get, it seemed a better image... hmmmm
