Morning all,

I picked up a Sony A700 yesterday and have a problem with one of my lenses. The 18-70 and 100-300 are fine but when I put my Sigma 24mm on the camera there's a strange sound, the AF doesn't work and when I select MF and turn the ring it's ratchety. It's not the lens because I tried it on the KM5D and it's fine.

It's almost as though the AF drive on the body doesn't connect up with the lens properly, when I switch to MF it's as though you can feel then lens half of the coupling riding over the body half. Oddly I've just found the MF button by the grip which sounds like it retracts the drive and this stops the ratcheting. Not an ideal solution though.

Is this a known problem between the A700 and certain lenses or is it possible I have a duff camera?

A700's and some other Sony's have been known to strip gears on Sigma lenses.

Odd though as you say it still works on another camera.

Cheers Flash. I think the last post on the first page is the same as what I'm experiencing. Doesn't sound like stripped gears to me. I'm annoyed though as I really like this lens and having read that thread it makes me cautious as to how to procede with my next lens purchase. I was going to get something like the Sigma 24-70 as a portrait lens as the Sony equivelant is way more expensive but not if the body is going to strip the gears on it:(

i believe the "slow" setting helps cut down on the damage.
i have my 70-200 on fast, and no problems yet anyway! dont know if it has better setup inside or not.

Seems I need to take an angle grinder to the lens and open up the slot for the AF drive as it's wider on the A700 (and some other models on a completely random basis) than the slot on the lens. At least the lens isn't going to be binned but I'm not impressed that I have to resort to these lengths.

On another note I went into my local Jessops today to think about buying a the vertical grip and in the week I've been away with work the price has gone up from £199 which they'd had it at for weeks to the rrp of £235. Rubbish.

Looks as if there may have been a Sony price rise as WEx are even dearer. If you don't find one at a decent price let me know and I'll see what I can do ;)
