Sony A700 menu screen problem

I have had the A700 from new for 18 months, and never had a problem with it. Yesterday, I turned the camera on, and the rear screen was blank. I pressed the menu button, and the menu appeared. I pressed the bottom button to show images on the card and they appeared. I pressed the menu button again, which shows the current settings for the camera, and it was blank.
The camera still works, on manual and autofocus, and displays the information in the viewfinder, and I can change the ISO rating.
Does anyone know if this is a known problem with these cameras?

Sounds it's got confused about where to display the viewfinder information. I know my 350 has a display button that cycles through various display options so you can have almost nothing on the lcd. Also if it has eye start that can blank the lcd when it thinks you're using the viewfinder.

I'd probably take the battery out. Leave it out for a while and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't I'd try a 'reset to default values' or equivalent as there's usually one in a menu somewhere. If the menu displays ok and the information is in the viewfinder then it is mostly likely a rogue setting I would have thought.

I may well try that. When in doubt, take the battery out and start again.:)

Just a quick bump on this thread, because taking the battery out and putting it back did not solve the problem.
One of the disadvantages of this, is that I cannot monitor the battery life, and that is quite serious.
 
I'd try cleaning the eye start thingies too. Just in case it's permanently thinking the viewfinder is in use.

If none of the above work then it probably means a trip to a repair shop :-(
 
Has the camera had a knock at all, does the menu appear if you hit the fn button and by any chance is yours a US spec
 
Guess what folks, I have been a silly boy, and hit the "DISP" button by mistake:bang::bang::bang:
This is what happens when sub standard humans get control of an advanced piece of machinery.:bonk:
 
I'm pretty certain I've done the same thing and hit the disp without realising button then wondered where the lcd display went the next time I switched it on... better that than broken :)

You learnt a valuable lesson...and so have I if it ever happens to me.:D
