Hi,

I have just been offered a Brand new Sony A900 UK stock for £1400. I know the new price of these is now £1899 so thats a god price isnt it?

Also i would have £700 left for a decent lens then.

Would this be a better buy than the D700 i can get for £1450?

Amy

Personally i say no as your buying into a system with a lot smaller numbers of users which will limt your ability to buy used kit or your ability to sell in the future, also the number of accesories , lens or 3rd pary goods available is likely to be less than Nikon.

It depends what you shoot. For landscapes I'd go for A900 for its 21MP. There are very good lenses like zeiss 16-35mm, 24-70mm, 85mm f/1.4 etc, and the list is only getting longer. In body IS seems a fantastic idea too. High ISO files seem rather noisy.

D700 wins hands down for low light and action work. Nikon pro lenses aren't any cheaper, but selection is better.

This A900 is brand new and uk stock apparantly. Its a solicitors who bought a few of them in to use for work and decided they only need 1 and itsd passed the 28 days to return it. So by buying this i will have warranty wont i? , even though i havent bought it off their supplier

not really true as there is a hell of a lot of used minolta lenses available for the alpha cameras.

Plenty of s/h lenses in the Sony mount, after all Minolta introduced the first ever AF SLR and produced plenty of lenses to fit the mount. Also Sigma and Tamron have supported the mount for very many years so there's loads of those about as well.

evilbay search minolta in digital lens - 240 same search canon 2591 and nikon 1937 -a poll on here for system users.

It's not new though, it may well be unused, but you won't legally be the first owner, so unless Sony warranties are transerable then you're buying a secondhand camera with no guarantee.

You also need to bear in mind that if you're planning to use wireless flash triggers or anything similar that Sony have their own hotshoe configuration, so none of the regular triggers will work with one of their cameras without an adapter.

Yes, but there are also commensurately fewer people looking for them - it all balances up.
As for cost of lenses well, if you want to make the most of 24Mp on any system you are going to be paying a lot for lenses.
& where's the Canon or Nikon stabilized 16-35, 24-70/2.8, 85/1.4 etc. ...?

On the other hand there are plenty of former CaNikon or dual (even triple) system users that say that there is something about the quality of the A850/A900 files that they find unmatched by the other 2.

The one area that imo the Minolta/Sony system falls short atm is in the action/sports/ultra tele area.
If he wants to do landscape/fashion/ product shots etc. it's a perfectly viable choice.

That is searching in digital though. As a lot of sellers may date Minolta pre-digital then chances are theres more! Also a lot of sellers will sell their old lenses along with their film SLR's.

When you take into account Minolta, Sony, Tamron and Sigma lenses there are plenty. Yet I bet you'd be happy if you had the money to use the stuff in the Sony lineup.

This is true. About £6 on ebay for one of them. Or a completely ridiculous £100 from Sony.

"I'd go for A900 for its 21MP"

It's actually 24mp I think.

The Sony looks nice, built in IS and high dynamic range too. It should be quite wonderful.

The D700 has a built in flash and looks like the only camera on the market that directly replaces the 35mm SLR's we all had a few years ago. Very tempting.

Any chance you can get them both?

Caveat Emptor.

Ask yourself, why would a firm of Solicitors buy a load of reasonably mid to high end DSLR's - when probably 90% of the people who work there have a very basic knowledge of photography at best. Surely they would buy a few £100 or so point and shoots.

Any proof the firm of solicitors bought it? Sounds a bit iffy to me.
