Sony alpha 350 DSLR rear screen problem

We have sone relations staying here over the festive period, and they have the above camera.
The rear screen is showing approx half white and the balance vertical stripes, no sign of an image, so I suspect it is damaged, although it doesn't show any signs of damage.
They are being quoted approx £300 for a repair, which seems steep to me.
They live near Chesterfield, so any help re a good repair specialist in that area would be appreciated, and any input re the damage as well!!

£300 sounds a bit too steep, infact that's more than the camera itself. I believe Sony do a fixed price repair for approximately £120. Alternatively, you can order a spare screen from ebay for under £30. I remember seeing some guides onto how to replace the screen yourself which I recall wasn't challenging at all. It was effectively take apart the screen assembly disconnect the ribbon and replace with new unit and screw back together. I'll see if I can find the guide again..
 
It could be worth taking a shot or two and putting them up on your PC to make sure that it's only the screen that is faulty.

Yup, done that and the camera is fine...and Evo thanks for all your comments, will tell them that info.

Well, I've just looked at the video and on ebay, looks like as you say it'll be about £30!!

Fantastic, thanks for your help, looks like the camera won't be a scrapper as they had thought.

Wish you could repair a 7D screen as easily!!

Well I decided to do a dry run, took it apart and put it back together just to make sure we could do it....the only difficult bit was putting the flat connector back in which required a female's delicate hand rather than my clumsy one....back as we started with a duff screen, and a new one ordered from HK for £31...thanks Evo!!

Unfortunately I won't do the repair as they live too far away, but I will post the result!!
Delivery on the screen looks to be near end of Jan, so don't hold your breath!!!

Hi, great stuff. Truth is I wished I had the advice before, I sent mine to Sony for a fixed repair fee of 100 pounds, but for the hassle I reckon I would of given diy ago! Let us know how your relatives get on.

Were there no sellers from UK, month sounds long for hk?
