Hi

I am looking to get back into DSLR again, and have been reading really good reviews about the Sony Alpha A230

Does anyone have this camera? Is it good? Easy to use?

Thanks
Vicky

this is a decent camera however the grip can be off putting for some people. many will say try out at a camera shop and see which you like which is the general rule of thumb when shopping for a new camera.

if it was me i would buy a secondhand sony a200 which is around £200 and have better ergonomics than the a230, it also gives you more money to spend on lenses.

may i ask, what do you want to shoot?

Very true. The grip gave me finger cramps after only a few minutes of trying it out in a shop. The kit lens is also unusually soft, I thought, but that might have been the demonstration model only.

I used an A230 for about three months and never found the grip uncomfortable. If you have large hands you might find a different grip more comfortable. Try one in a shop and see if it is comfortable in your hands. But, that's the same advice for any camera.

I found it a great camera, and a real bargain at the price. Sony DSLRs also have in-built vibration reduction which works with any lens. With Canon and Nikon you need special vibration reduction lenses which of course cost more.

The A230 also has good help screens and hints which are great if you are new to DSLRs - or you can turn off the help as you get more experienced.

I also liked the fact that it is relatively light and small so is easier to carry around with you.

Decent beginner camera, many Sony lenses are aimed at the beginner end of the scale.

You'll struggle with noise though, a friend owns one and his is terrible in low light.

Its pretty much the same as the A200 so id get a secondhand one to startw ith and see how you get on.

Noise is an issue with dark rooms etc, but for general shooting turn off the ado setting and it reduces noise quite a bit, on top of that you can run noise reduction software to remove any other bits if its really needed.

The camera is fantastic on bright days though, the kit lens is not soft at all, creates some sharp images.

I bought the A200, 50mm 1.8, 18-200mm, sony grip, and a flashgun +bag and cf cards.
Cost about £600 in total for everything new last year.

Im thikning of selling so i can get a more advanced camera.

I agree with evilonion about the 18-55 kit lens. I found it sharp and it's had some good reviews. It won't compare to a pro lens , but it's as good as most kit lenses.

Hi

Thanks for all your opions.

I would be looking to get one second hand, and have considered the A200 aswell :)

I would like it for general photography of family, freinds and my pets.

Would like to also get into macro aswell, but once I have saved enough to get a decent lens :D
