Hi guys a relative has asked me for advice on getting a compact camera and they're quite keen on the Sony NEX-5, but I know nought about it beyond having seen it in Jessops before, is it a good camera?

I know that others in a similar bracket would be the Olympus Pen or one of the Panasonic's, but I'm not really sure of the benefits / merits of either system.

Without going on about it for ages, the camera is fantastic.

(Waits for everyone else to post about the EPL1-2 or the GH1 GF1..) :lol:

it's a fun camera with great image quality & very easy to use with the version3 update & i prefer it to the GF1 i had before...just a lack of lens options at the moment..here's a shot taken with my NEX5 & 18-55mm shot RAW & converted in CS5

It's a great camera :) The camera can be used in fully manual mode i.e. manual shutter, aperture, ISO, white balance etc. In fact the camera has a DSLR sensor inside, and apart from using the LCD rather than a viewfinder, it's essentially the same as a DSLR. Obviously there's less buttons, but these can be programmed to quickly change ISO settings, WB etc.

Why not, i did.

I just got rid of my D90 for one and i'm pleased i did.

Check out all my recent images they are all taken with the nex-5

Lovely pictures, I know its possible to use adaptors to use all sorts of lenses on these what are people using?
Saw one of these in Jessops today it was smaller than I imagined but also felt really nice in the hand, the metal body seems nicer v some of the other similar cameras.

Here we go Chris, give these a try, I have a Sony to M42 adaptor from them, and they were quick, efficient and very helpful.

Are there different colour lenses? I've only ever seen the Silver ones.
 
I found that the AF kit lenses were not so great but OK. The sensor is however superb and once quality lenses are fitted you will reap the rewards. The rear screen is the best from any camera i have ever seen and it really grows on you.

When you get yours make sure you upgrade the firmware o version 0.3 which will let you assign the buttons for functions like ISO so you don't have to route through the menu system.

I get mine from Ebay. There is an adapter section here and lenses are up to you. M42 yield the cheaper lenses. Stick to Carl Zeiss, Pentacon, Olympus OM, Canon FD, Vivitar, etc and if you have loads of cash look at Voigtlander lenses and if you have won the lottery look at Leica lenses!!

A good cheap lens to start with is the Helios 55/2 which is 58mm f2 and is a sharp portrait lens. They sell for about £10-£20.

I wanted nex5 :)

am on the lookout for nex5 for my other half :)

I remember there were nice deals not long ago for it....with a bit of luck we will have them again :)
