Impressive indeed, but the limited choice of lens and their cost seems to hamper the system in my view. Lovely body though :)
 
That's a good review although it's no more than I expected tbh.I think they do miss the point a bit though in criticising the availability of Sony lenses for the camera. It's actually fair comment , but the point is that with the relevant adaptor a wide range of high quality glass from other marques can easily be used on the camera. Sony made details of the lens mount available to all and sundry at a very early stage, so I think it was clearly Sonys intention that owners need not be fettered by the available choice of lenses and this will be a lot of the attraction for potential buyers.

The review makes the point that there'll be no image stabilisation or auto focusing with many third party lenses, but anyone who hasn't experienced the peak focusing system on these cameras won't appreciate how good it is. It makes manual focusing far easier and more positive than any rangefinder I've seen or any SLR for that matter.

Good review, but I think it will still be a while before we see the camera in the UK. :(
 
Tempted by this, but I'll wait and see what Fuji comes up with next year.

Also their complaint about the dials on the top panel is a bit silly, of course you can differentiate between them, one's on the left, the other's on the right! The gap in between makes for a good thumb rest.

I didn't find focus peaking on the NEX-5 to be better than focusing with the M9, but it is a nice feature to have. The NEX-7 is looking nice, but it's taking its time to reach here which could harm it.
 
I still think that a big problem,for any of the mirrorless cameras,the lack of native fast zoom lens.
A lot of the time this is not a problem,but when you look at Sony line up of native lens it is very poor.
And if your going to put such a good senor in a camera,you really do need a good range of native glass to back it up :)
 
I enjoyed it, especially the ref to the panic and calls for his death it'll cause on internet forums :D

Sony make an adapter that allows A mount lenses to be attached and retain aperture control and autofocus on the NEX range, which means there is a considerable choice of fast zooms, including the splendid ZA 24-70/2.8 and ZA 16-35/2.8.

While A mount may not be native, they are fully functional when attached to a NEX via the adapter.
 
The adapter adds cost and also bulk and the lenses do seem to be rather on the large-ish size too.

I suppose you can't have MFT sized lenses on an APS-C body, shame, then there's the lack of lens markings that bugs me although some will not care, and the AF friendly but not so manual friendly focus system.

You can't have everything :( :D

Adgeed with you,but just saying it would just be nice to see some native lens out.

Without having to add the bulk,of an adapter,to make full used of the senor :)
 
You can't make the NEX/M9 sensors match which is the biggest problem in a comparison. The Leica 50 Summilux ASPH is a great lens though and probably the best I've owned so far and does a good job on the NEX5. I wouldn't be buying a NEX to put that gigantic A mount adapter on it, I'd probably stick to the Zeiss 24/Sony 50 f1.8 and my M glass. The 18-55 and 16mm E mount that I have probably wouldn't look too good on the 24mp sensor.

the 16-35 & 24-70 are FF lenses, stlll you could always use something like a tamron 17-50/2.8.

in real life it's really not that big.
all these are stopgaps though whilst we await more e-mount lenses (1st Tamron now on sale) & on-sensor PD AF.

The Tammy 17-50mm f2.8 is MASSIVE next to a Panny 14-42mm although the latter is slower.

Personally I don't think I'll ever rush out and buy a small body and use such relatively big lenses on it, it ruins the compact package IMVHO.

I'm with you on that, great body just needs smaller lenses. Will stick with Panny's

a lot slower - f5.6 @42. & the NEX is probably a stop better in high ISO than the mft bodies & better at subject isolation due to the larger sensor (all other things being equal).
So on MFT you would need something like a constant f2.0 to compare.

btw you mentioned earlier the "not so manual friendly focus system" - most people seem to love the peaking system for MF.

Who wrote that? It's written in the first person, so I presume Michael Reichmann but it's unsigned.

It's rubbish - a test of nothing. He's cropped an M9 down to 8mp (not 12 as the writer claims) and then said it's not as sharp as the Sony with 24mp. Well, erm, yes.

And who ever uses a full frame camera and then deliberately crops down to 1.5x format? :thinking:

I though MR knew what he was talking about, but even if it's not him, it's his site and he should know better. LL has just nose-dived in my estimation.
 
So the NEX-7 has the best APS-C sensor. :eek:

If Nikon can get it into, say a D400 body, then they may have some camera on their hands. ;) Especially teamed up with some of Nikon's lenses.


Depends whether Sony are offering it out, and Nikon, or Pentax for that matter, are in a position to use it.

Sony has had the best APS-C sensors for a couple of years now.

Sony's sensor operation & their camera division are separate entities - it will be available for sale (at the right price of course!).
Past history says that at least in jpeg both Nikon & Pentax would probably get a little more out of it.
 
I've got version 1 of the alpha/nex adapter, was considering the newer one but at £350 no thanks :thumbsdown: can buy some very nice m42 glass for that price lol
