Sony NEX filters

I'm fairly new to photography and have recently bought a Sony NEX 3 compact SLR with 18-55mm lens. I ordered a few cheap filters from 7dayshop.com to get a feel of functions each one offers. My camera lens is 49mm, and so were the filters I ordered, but none of them will fit on my lens. I was under the impression that filters were pretty standard and could be used on most SLR lenses as long as its a matching size, yet these filters are probably near 5mm too small. Am I completely missing something here or is it just because I bought cheap filters.

Thanks for any advice

Sounds like they've sent you the wrong size. What size does it say on the actual filter? If not marked, what do they measure across the diameter of the thread?

Filters definitely say 49mm, and measuring the inside of the thread this is correct. Could it be something comparability wise with my camera? It states 49mm on the lens and on the reverse of the lens cap, but measuring the outside of the thread shows it around 52-53mm?

when you say measuring the outside of the thread where did you measure? the diameter of the threaded part, visable above the writing on the lens should be 49mm

Are you trying to screw them on backwards. Filters have threads on both the front and back so you can stack them or fit a lens cap over the filter.
