Are they better than a DSLR?
i want a P&S for just out and about and a DSLR for when taking more sporty pics. does the sony NEX3/5 do both?
 
Very difficult to answer that without more info. What sports exactly? You would probably get away taking pics at a conker match (as long as you wear the correct eye protection). Other sports may need different something different. What sort of image quality are you after? How much are you willing to spend? Even the P&S aspect is a maybe depending type of answer. If it is really just a P&S you want something simpler may be better.

And personally speaking, no, they aren't better than a DSLR.

Essentaily they are a DSLR as they have a APS-C sensor, the same as the Nikon D90 and others, just not in a DSLR looking body. You can also use most DSLR lenses with the right adapter.
 
I would have thought that some sports would be a bit more tricky without a viewfinder though.
