I love being the annoying person at parties who snaps hundreds of photos of people when they're least expecting it. Candid portraits are my thing. People who aren't used to it get a bit annoyed at first but come round to it pretty quickly once they see the results. Everyone seems to love this style of portrait!
Sony has just announced something to make taking these photos completely passive; the Party-Shot. It's a small tripod-like accessory which you mount your (Sony Cybershot) camera on. It can rotate and tilt the camera however it likes. It will find faces, compose the shot based on the rule of thirds, wait until someone's smiling, then take the photograph automagically. Leave this thing on a table in the middle of a room and it'll take all your candid photos by itself.
How do you feel about this? Personally, I'd like to see some of the results it can produce. I think it'd be useful but it's certainly not going to make my role redundant. It can't move to other rooms, invoke emotion, or do a whole lot to get interesting prespectives. It might be an interesting addition to a party though.
More information here.
