Sony RX1 announced.

And rather expensive at $2800, needs to deliver something spectacular to justify over the X100 which is going for around the £600 mark....
 
It's a big deal this camera, it could be the model for a interchangeable version. It does sound a lot but $1200 - $1500 of its probably the lens.

Lens size will always be your limiting factor, fast full frame lens will not be small....heck Sony have been struggling with the NEX lens design, so god knows how they would deal with Full Frame....
 
With such a high spec its hard to believe it doesn't have a viewfinder.

Yep, I'll await confirmation that the extra is worth paying for (not that I'd buy it anyway, the focal length doesn't work for me) until then on skeptical about the pricing vs quality.

I can't help but think they've alienated a huge potential market with a hugely expensive lens...

Yeah i know, but most people will except its not going to be as compact as the current crop of CSC's but its a lot smaller than all the current full frame bricks (m9 excluded).

We are seeing some very exciting things coming from the fuji and sony camp. They are making canikon look a little boring.
 
Sony have a bunch of new gear announced, but nothing that would make me want to jump back ... yet. My first dslr was a Sony. The A99 looks juicy, bit of an ugly beast but great specs. This Rx1 looks ideal for gig shooters. You'll grab great, crop-able images from a few rows back. Too bad it's fixed at 35mm. And no VF?? An add on at a ridiculous price will be available no doubt.
 
I get a feeling this is a first gen product and probably the basis for the FF Nex. Kudos to Sony for releasing it though, most companies wouldn't have the balls too, instead they peddle out their incremental model updates.

I'm really tempted by the nex-6. Collapsible kit lens a 35mm pancake in my pocket and i'm away to go. A 12mm pancake would be nice too.
 
Sony taking a leaf out of the Leica playbook with accessory prices!!!

I actually think as an interchangable system this could be marketed against Leica - a prime only Zeiss based system would give the Germans a run for their money.....

Yep, i see this as a prime lens interchangable camera too. In fact i see all CSC's this way.
 
Am I the only one thinks it looks a bit flimsy? especially the top plate.

I know which I'd rather have. But .... something this size ... so handy for shooting gigs, great for street ... argh! The price is the killer.

We get stomped even more here in Ireland. If it's £2799 there, that's €3499 here, I'm betting it'll be more like €4000! yikes. I'm out ...

Yeah, ripoff Britain. Thats over £1k, some may say add vat etc bla bla bla thats still nowhere near £1k difference.
 
US prices are quoted ex. sales tax whereas UK prices are quoted incl. 20% VAT.
In the US Sony run a programme that seems to pretty effectively avoid discounting - in the UK after a few months we'll probably see a street price 20-30% below msrp ...

Not a camera that interests me but these days there are pretty much 2 ways to make money - high volume, low price or low volume (niche even) & high price. Middle market is fairly dead,
& even if not many people buy it it will add cachet to Sony's camera range.
Wouldn't be the first time that manufacturers have had an unprofitable product for the halo effect to the rest of the range.

& as mentioned it could well be a sighting shot to provide feedback for future products.
 
as I said though after a few months I expect street prices to be roughly the same on both sides of the Atlantic & in the UK you have better consumer rights (which increases the cost of warranty support)
e.g. in the US an A77V is still $1298 before sales tax (typically 6% so $1375 incl.) whereas in the UK it's $1330 incl 20% VAT. Cheaper in the UK!
 
Yeah, I know Sony drop fiercely in the UK after a few months, its just rubbish that early adopters have to pay for the luxury.

Pretty much the same for all of them - so do Canon & Pentax. Not sure about Nikon here but in the US they are heavily discounted from MSRP using coupons etc.
 
Wow, that's expensive! What the hell does it offer to justify its price? Seems manufacturers are just charging what they like. Thought the OMD was expensive!
 
Seems very overpriced to me, other manifacturers generally seemed to offer tech(or brand with Leica) at a lower price on fixed lens bodies but Sony seem to be charging for the privillage.

If Nikon can sell a DSLR with a similar sensor at $1500 and make a profit you'd think Sony could sell a pretty basic compact at $2000 or less even with the lens included.

The D800 sensor would have made things more interestring aswell I'd say, offering that at a decent price may have tempted alot of people who don't want a DSLR or are tired to a rival brand.
 
They will make a big deal about the lens, an f/2 prime ... but it's 35mm, on full frame. I wouldn't be using that much for portraiture, you certainly won't be using it for sports. It's a very limited package for the money.

The D600 is due to be announced, a tidy full frame, with a similar , if not the same sensor as this. Apparently it's going to be around $1500, add on a 50mm 1.4 and you have a much juicer package for a lot less.
 
It'll come down in price, but it doesn't seem that expensive when you consider it is full frame, compact, a Sony with Zeiss optics and the first of its kind. People have been wanting one for ages, then one comes along and they want it for half the price.
