Sony RX10/Panasonic FI 1000 any users?

I owned a Panasonic F2 recently which was a lovely, very usable camera. I was very happy with the image quality but convinced myself I needed to go for ultimate image quality in a compact camera and went down the Sigma Merrill route. Image quality was stunning but hopeless above ISO 400. I then had the chance to trade my Merrill cameras for my friend's Fuji X-T1, a fabulous camera but I am struggling to bond with it, I really don't know why as it is superbly made and has great IQ.

I think I have realised I am not a serious photographer and really want something that offers the flexibility of my FZ200 but with better I - so in a long and rambling way I have come round to my question! The Sony RX10 and Panasonic FZ1000 seem to be the ideal compromise.

I have played with both cameras in John Lewis, the Panasonic has the greater lens range but I much prefer the build of the Sony. I am guessing both will be pretty similar in terms of IQ. Has anyone here used either/both cameras? If so how did you find them, especially at higher ISO's and in terms of focusing speed/accuracy?

pretty much any camera after merril feels lacking :-P

camera store in canada did a comparison on youtube, favoured the panny I think
 
I've had an RX10 for almost a year now and haven't used my D7100 at all in that time. I very rarely need more than 200mm and Clear Image Zoom gives acceptable results up to 400mm if I really do need it. The RX10 doesn't have the dynamic range of the D7100 - I was in a church last week with a spot of sun light coming in and the RX10 JPEG didn't have the DR that my eyes did to handle the contrast between lit and unlit areas. RAW might have done better but I didn't try it.
The usual gripes about the RX10 are the zoom and AF speeds but I rarely shoot anything that moves so they don't worry me.

Thanks for that - I usually shoot RAW and JPEG simultaneously so that may help with the dynamic range.

Having held both cameras I don't think I could live with the plasticky feel of the Panasonic and the fast lens of the Sony should also help when it comes to low light scenes. I have to say that using the FZ200 previously was quite liberating as it was so easy not having to carry around a bunch of lenses. Maybe it is the lazy option but I think I really don't need the ultimate level of IQ the Fuji brings, the 1 inch sensor superzooms do look to offer a good compromise.
 
That's pretty much how I felt. I was taking my D5100 plus 16-85mm and 70-300mm on cruises, walking round with the 16-85 and leaving the 70-300 behind then cursing the 16-85 for not being long enough. I've sold the D5100.... The real test was supposed to be how it compared to my D7100 plus Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 combo at our annual street festival here on August bank holiday but it poured with rain so I didn't go.

Rx10 for me, better corner sharpness. A stop more dynamic range, think it's 12.5 stops or thereabouts so far from poor and better than a full frame canon!

Constant 2.8 is important to me, the panasonic drops very quickly. Build quality, weather sealing, top lcd and built in Nd filter.
 
I have decided to go for the RX10, my decision is on basis of the build, 2.8 lens and handling which I much preferred. Also helped by the £50 cashback on top of the already cheaper price.

My Fuji is listed and should hopefully give me enough left over for a used DP2M for when I feel I want to get serious :)
 
When printed at a3 I can't tell an rx10 shot from my a77 with decent lens. I doubt you could tell the difference between it and full frame when printed but I should be able to test out that theory in the not too distant.
