Minnnt, when I saw this released this morning my first thought was of you and your Gear Acquisition Syndrome...! I'm just glad it doesn't look as cool as the Fuji range otherwise I'd be lost!


This thing looks mentally good...
 
Man, I've got such an unfair reputation! I only have 2 cameras where as others here have far more!! :LOL:

I must confess I was going to buy an XQ1 next week but it looks like I might have a job coming up so I need to buy a 17-50 2.8 instead.

Gutted.
 
17-55 canon? Got one of them and its frigging great. Protip - buy a dusty one cheap. It takes 2 mins to clean them by popping out the front element, it's dead easy!
 
I didn't expect there to be a new version of the RX100 so soon, but I certainly didn't expect Sony to try and put an EVF on it. :eek: It is an unusual way they have done it too. :clap:

I hope the new camera pushes the price of the original RX100 down (as long as the stock lasts) as I would mind one of those at the right price.
 
I've got an original RX100 but have been considering a Mark 2, primarily for the tilty screen. The new Mark 3 looks really interesting but depending on price I may go for it or see if it helps push the Mark 2 down a little.
 
Weird design.

If you want a VF, you want a VF. Not a tiny awkward pop up thing. Want to have to deploy the VF for every shot? Me neither. Do it properly - decent size VF and reduce the screen size (you don't need such a big one if you're not using it to compose).

If you don't want a VF, it's an expensive gimmick you'll rarely/never use.

So who is this for? It looks to me like spec design from a focus group that the engineers have worked wonders to deliver but won't actually satisfy anyone.
I hope I'm wrong, as Sony deserve success for pushing the design envelope.
 
I think it's just covering every base. Mk1 for no EVF option, Mk2 for detachable large 2.4m dot EVF, Mk3 for a smaller 1.44m EVF. And it's currently the number one selling camera on Amazon USA, so i'm guessing there's a market for it.

I'm happy to see Bionz X and XAVC-S coming to a smaller camera. 50mb/s video and 120fps at 720 (It's taken Sony awhile for the slow mo, though) are great selling points. It's also strange to think that little EVF will have better clarity than the EVF in the Sony a57 - with the new processor and moderate res. it should have a great refresh rate.
 
The biggest improvement here with the m3 is the lens IMHO - f1.8-2.8 23-70 equiv - biggest complaint I had with my rx100 was that as soon as you moved off the widest end the lovely bright f1.8 aperture fell away really quickly and was sloooow.
 
I read that it was at 2.8 by 30mm....not sure if that's correct or not..
 
I shoot wide pretty much all of the time so that wouldn't bother me.

The only thing against this for me as of yet is the 'unconfirmed' price. Suppose a few months and a grey import will lower that substantially.

Yeah it will be a small Evf but given its unheard of to have a half decent Evf in such a tiny compact camera (and no I won't listen to LF1 arguments!) I think they've done a great job.

It's the best built in Evf you will ever see in a camera that can not only rival dslr quality but a camera that is so small it can slip into a jeans pocket!

Then people would moan about it not being the exact thing thst makes the RX100 - a pocketable premium camera. Sony have probably had the sense to think; "how often does someone actually use the viewfinder on a compact...not often. Why not save on space and make it a pop up."

Great idea.
 
the screen might not be as good as the slt series ones, as theres less room for optics, the nex7 has a worse viewfinder than the slt's because theres less room for optics, but the actual screen/evf panel is the same.
 
I must be weird. The last time I had a compact with a VF I used the VF almost all the time!
 
I think this looks fantastic, if the price is good I might get one to add to my x-100. the pop up viewfinder is a great space saving idea, bright sun pop it up otherwise use the screen. for something truly pocketable that's acceptable

I do love my RX100 II, but thought since buying it that the space where the flash was would be ideal for a pop up viewfinder. The new camera looks fantastic - shame I can't justify a swap but it would be top of my list for a compact by some way.
 
£599 at DR. I'm sure many will jump in due to "must have" but that price really needs to begin with a 4 I think
 
while its above my price range I don't think its too ott, its still cheaper than the x100s. mind you if it was closer to £400 my wallet would be twitching!
 
I hope other companies follow suit, I just cant use cameras without a viewfinder. Its definitely leading the field though with the built-in ND filter, flip screen, built-in flash, pop-up EVF, f1.8-2.8 (I know it doesnt zoom as far now which is clever from Sony ;) )
Lets hope they stick an APS-C sensor in the next one ;)
 
I'm just thinking that it's something like $100 over the m2's launch price isn't it ? So once the hysteria calms down.....

At this stage, buying would mean selling my d7000 but I like that too much so maybe a lens will need to go to start the fund off...

I think it is about that, as you say, when the price stabilizes it will be a good one to look out for
