Hi

I am sorry to do one of these but I really dont know what is on the market.

I would like something wider than the 28mm I currently have (its on a crop sensor) and would love something fast like a F2.8

What is available at the lower end of the market? I dont mind it not being VR and dont mind any of the brands.

Also, what would be the main use for the lens? A typical use of a wide angle is landscape, where fast lens arent always important due to the fact your are almost always on a tripod. I guess you have something else in mind?

Nikon 18-70mm? Cracking little lens for the money (about £100 2nd hand), lightweight and sharp and again f3.5 at 18mm.

I wasnt thinking 'true' wide angle as in a 10-20mm (although I'd quite like one, i wouldnt use it enough to justify the cash)

What do you mean by "lower end of the market"? Do you have a budget in mind?

£350 second hand was kind of my upper limit

Also, what would be the main use for the lens?......

I was thinking maybe having something in the range of 17-50mm and having it as a general walkaround lens which is why I wanted something that would do better in low light. I find quite often my 28-100 doesnt have enough width on my camera, i also have a 70-300. so I was planning on getting a better wider lens and doing away with the 28-100 altogether.

I'm not convinced wide angles need to be really fast though. In which case, try the £50 kit lens - 18mm @ f/3.5. :)

I did see that but thought it would be no different in low light to what I already have but just wider. It was still a consideration just as a short term measure until i could afford a faster lens.

Thanks everyone else for your suggestions. I am pretty new to all this so didnt know whats out there.

tamron 17-50 2.8, great lens, and bang on budget @ under £350 new for the non VC (IS/VR equivilant)

definetely recommend this lens. absolute bargain around £100 second hand. i use mine all the time and its very sharp, pretty nicely built (better than the 18-55 and 18-135 kit's) fast, quiet focusing and produces lovely images.

honestly for nikon users i wouldnt recommend anything else as a cheap standard zoom unless you need something faster or wider. can only see a tiny difference between it and the 17-55 f2.8 i used to have, especially at middle apetures and its not enough to make me want to upgrade.

3 recent photos taken with one on my flickr below if interested, uploaded them last night.

if you really need faster id go for the tamron 17-50mm
