**SORTED** anybody use Karen's Replicator for Back-up...?

somebody here suggested it - looks good ... updates all altered files to an external HDD

but not quite as expected....example .......say 4 folders are scheduled as ''Jobs''

Pictures...contains sub-folders
Downloads....files
Documents...contains sub-folders
email contacts...files

it backs them up ok on a schedule..but
it copies just the sub-folders and files - then puts them ALL in alpha order

I want the external HDD to have the 4 main folders as listed......:thinking:

Use a different product. Allwaysynch is good.
 
have a look at robocopy its part of the windows 2003 server tools so a free download (always a good price) runs on xp windows 7 and even vista will exactly mirror your disk shout me if you cant find the download on microsoft site and will dig it out when I am home
 
I'm using Synctoy at the moment. I tried Allwaysynch, but after running several backups over a short period of time (I was switching computers) I found it suddenly became free no longer because it thought I was a commercial user (lots of files in a short period of time).

I spent quite a while trying different backup software types, and I've settled for Synctoy.

quite busy atm so will look into these later.....

set Replicator to update C:/user/user/john which is everything

not the best way, but at least data is safe for now

I may be one of those recommending Replicator. It always copies the various folders and files so that the backups (externals) look just like the originals in terms of layout and ordering, so I am at a bit of a loss as to what is happening with you.

Can you explain what you you expect the job "Documents" for example to copy? you mention only sub-folders and files copying over. What is the root folder/drive you want to go that doesn't?

the 'job' asked for 'source file'

i selected ''Documents''

it copied the sub-folders and files...not the root folder ''Documents''

so the next job - say ''pictures'' - got added to the above and all listed in alpha order

my idea was to have 2 separate folders
 
If you use Windows 7 than you can use this command in a batch file...

robocopy "D:\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music" "S:\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music" /MIR

This will cause the folder on the S drive to look identical (mirror) to the D drive, it will add, remove or update the files and subfolders.

Type the command in notepad, change the paths to what you need, save as something.bat

If you want, you can schedule it to run every day/week

You can also download robocopy for other versions of Windows

Its actually in Vista as well (I've not used Vista, so didn't know)

I'm sorry you are having problems with this. I have had a look at some of the Jobs I have set up and cannot find anything wrong. If it of interest here are a couple of examples...

o. Job called 'CS4 Cache'
- Source: J:\Cache
- Destination: M:\CS4 Cache

Loads of sub-folders which go across as an exact mirror layout

o. Job called 'home projects'
- Source: D:\Documents\Home projects\
- Destination: \\CARMEN\Laptop data drive\Home projects\

The folder has sub-folders and sub-sub-folders and they all carry across as a mirror image layout. (CARMEN is my laptop and the backup goes across the home network.

o. Job called 'Data backup'
- Source: D:\
- Destination: M:\Data

The drive has sub-folders and sub-sub-folders and they all carry across as a mirror image layout.

The only thing I can suggest is to write to Karen at...

karenk@karenware.com.

perhaps i am not explaining very well......:bang:

the sub-folders of the jobs go over to the external HDD all ok
BUT
they are not kept under their original folder but ALL listed together in alpha order

eg
job 1 is folder PICS with files 01,02, and 07
job 2 is folder LETTERS with files 04, and 05

the files appear on the external HDD as
01
02
04
05
07

not listed in their original folders --- chaos trying to restore if I lose data off my C:\..............:shake:

Yes, I understand what you are describing, but I have no explanation for this behaviour, as I don't experience the mis-ordering/re-ordering myself.

In my examples, which I showed so you could see specifically the paths of the sources and destinations, the ordering of sub-folders, sub-sub-folders and individual files are exactly the same on the destination location as they are on the source location.

I chose the examples to show the diversity of the sources and destinations; a whole volume, a root folder and a cross-network backup, in the hope that there was/is something different in what you are doing compared to what I am doing.

I am sorry that you are having this problem and would reiterate the suggestion to contact Karen Kenworthy to see if she can shed any light on the matter. Alternatively, I guess you need to look into alternative backup solutions to replace Replicator.

I only selected E:\ as the destination

WITHOUT setting up a directory structure ...dumb or what...?...:shrug:

all sorted now....thanks for all the guidance....john
