Ok. One to upset the purists. Anyone tried any "proper" sound recording for SLR video? I'm looking at either a hotshoe mike or a Zoom H4N. Any thoughts?

I tried a rode stereomic.

The biggest issue is that on a 7d there is no way to turn down the gain so you get a loud hiss. I believe the latest firmware update for the 5d II changed this for them

Without wishing to hi jack the OPs post, while we're on the subject of external mics, is there any way that it would be possible to use an external mic with one of the bodys that don't have the mic output port? AKA quality sound on a D5000 and 500D?

Errrm no, with nowhere to plug it in, how are you going to use an external mic?

I suppose you could desolder the internal one, drill a hole for a socket, mount and solder but thats definitely going to void your warranty ;-)

A slightly less drastic option than soldering a new connection to your camera - you could record to a laptop, or portable recording device with mic input - the Zoom H4n has XLR inputs, but at £300 it's an expensive option unless you have use for it elsewhere when not using it on videos (e.g. if you do radio work). Less expensive portable recording devices will probably have 3.5mm inputs, maybe you can get an adapter - dunno about the sound quality though.

Yeh, I wansn't sure...reason I asked, I was in my local camera shop last week, talking to the guys we know pretty well, going on about how even though the D90 only has a mono mic, its pretty good. To which he responded that if you attached a microphone to it from ebay, it would be so much better quality. Dunno what he was going on about - probably mixed up with the D300s! ah well, not worth the expenditure for soldering/Zoom H4n, so will bide my time til I can afford a 550D. :)

I may have some pro video work coming up (luckily working for the videographer) recording video on a 5dII and audio seperately using mics/radio mics all through a sound board
