My wife and I are off for a weeks caravan holiday near to Dumfries the first week in Aug (Southerness for those of you that know the area well). Can anybody recommend any places round and about to visit?

I've been to Southerness for a couple of long weekends.

Assuming you're looking for photo ops...

There's a nice lighthouse on the beach and New Abbey which I think is north of Southerness is lovely. If you google New Abbey Dumfries you'll see some pics.
 
Depends what you like to take photos of. For birds/wildlife there's Caerlaverock WWT, RSPB Mersehead and not far from Castle Douglas there is a red kite feeding station.

They are all worth a visit.
