Ouch they are not very quick either! How many machines do you run though and can they not be connected with cat5 layed behind things?

We have 7 laptops, 4 video games, blu-ray, tv, 7 computers, 2 network printers plus all manner of other stuff so that is WHY I wired it like that, simply to tidy it up as it was getting rather messy. I can backup a 120Gb image from the proliant to the Mac Pro or vice versa is a short time due to them both having dual gigabit networking. Powerline cabling is a bit slow, I discounted it for the studio and pulled cat6 from the data cabinet, into the attic, down the data pipe (:lol:), into the living room into a plastic box hidden away then back outside into the garden across the garden and into the studio, behind paneling to the airport express repeater and 2 ports on the wall near the studio iMac.

theyre not too bad to be honest, got the 85mbps versions and mainly use them for connecting my acer revo on the back of the TV to the NAS. streams HD content fine etc.

not wanting to miss a chance to do a dodgy paint diagram..

I'd do a diagram but everything goes to the patch panel and then patch leads connect ports of the panel together OR ports of the panel to ports on the switch :)

also powerline adaptors are worth a look if you cant run the cables. basically transforms your electrical cabling into a network.

Not much cop in an older house with different or multiple circuits though.

Certainly not the cure-all I thought they would be!
 
Just a quick thought in regards to the original post...

The PC that is going to be remotely connected to could sit right next to the router if there is space so removing the need for long cables/new wifi cards.

As the PC is not going to be touched as it will be controleld remotely there is no need for it to take up unnecessary space and a 1m cat5 cable costs next to nothing these days.

I just wanted to give an update on everything. I have now bought an ethernet PCI card, so I have connected up the pc to my laptop. I have enabled harddrive sharing etc. and so far, I have bridged the internet connection, so both are connected up to the internet right now - BUT via the same connection. I have also bought a wireless WiFi dongle, so I will be installing that onto the pc, to give it seperate internet connection.

Now I just need suggestions as to anything cool that I can do with it, with this set up. At the moment, I am just using them for multi-tasking.

Any suggestions are very welcome! Any idea is good!

As (I am guessing) the lappy has wireless built in set the pc up on wireless and move it somewhere out of sight as if it's all connected over the network it tidys the palce up...

As for somethihng cool to do, what would you class as cool and what would you like it to do?

Yes and no. My router is designed to take 4 seperate machines "leeches". If I connect my PC to the laptop, then it is using everything, from just one of those placements. All of them have an equal amount of bandwith, so if one is being taken up by two computers, and two connections to the internet - it will be halved between the PCs. If I connect my desktop, via a wireless adapter then it will be a seperate machine and they will get full bandwidth.

what router is it? is this something you have set up?
 
No, it is just how it works I think, as it has four separate outputs (either wireless or wired). I read about this and each port having a certain part of the bandwidth.

As to the router - I am not sure what it is. It is a wireless ADSL D-Link that we got with our offer from TalkTalk.
 
Normally a router will have a number of physical ports of which I'm guessing your router has 4 and then access to wireless.

Each router has a switching matrix designed to cope with a certain amount of data to be transfered between ports which I think you are referring to.

It is very unusual for a wireless router to limit the amount of wireless connections at such a small number unless manually configured to do so.

A "normal" router will only start sharing throughput capacity if the total requested exceeds the available capacity.

If you have an 8Mb/s ADSL connection and one computer is downloading something while the others are idle it will use the full 8Mb/s. If another computer starts downloading then the capacity will be shared, usually half and half if both remote servers are capable of sending data to fill the available capacity.

More sophisticated routers can set throughput limits on individual connections, it is unusual for this to be available (or configured if it is available) on a normal home user router though..

Bandwidth is a frequency range and measured in hertz.

Although correct I'm not sure this relates to the OP. Althoguh the OP refers to bandwidth in relation to the router the query is more related to how the router handles the available bandwidth and sharing the data between the ports.

If I recall correctly and I could well be wrong this would come down to the TCP/IP capabilities of the machines connected to the router and the request beign sent. MS has always been known to have poor TCP/IP capabilities in terms of efficiency so for example if a SUN box running Solaris and a Win7 machine were connected to the same router and the data sent was on request from the client the SUN box would be able to transfer the data at a faster rate due to a more efficient TCP/IP stack...

Getting off the beaten track a tad and trying to dust off the old brain cells which haven't had to deal with these sorts of answers in too many years....
