Hello all, it's time I thought I dipped the collective knowledge of TP'ers!

At the minute I have a Lowepro Altus 160, over the shoulder bag I got when I got the camera. Canon 1000d by the way, with 18-55 kit lens.

Birthday is coming up and I'm looking to expand my lens selection, (sorely tempted for a 550d - 1000d trade-in, hopefully I can resist!) First addition will more than likely be the 50mm 1.8, looking forward to experimenting with my 1st prime lens.

Next improvement is where it gets tricky for me to have the small Altus. I'll be looking at the 55-250 f/4-5.6 for my 1st telephoto.

So, all in all it would be 1000d body, 18-55mm, 50mm 1.8, 55-250mm, the 1000d grip, and an extra battery and a few memory cards.

I'd like to stay with Lowepro as I've gotten used to them over the year I've had the 1000d. Budget would be around £40, no worries about 2nd hand either.

I bought the Lowepro Fastpack, I think it's a 250 but may be 200. It has enough room for my Canon 50D with 300mm lens attached, plus another 3 - 4 small lenses in the bottom compartment (Canon 17-85, 18-200, 50, Sigma 105 Macro). It has an upper equipment pouch which can hold charger, batteries, filters, etc.... but the main advantage for me was the laptop storage which it states holds a 15" unit, however, I fit my 16.9" Sony Vaio in with ease!

Be careful though if you are looking to buy a camera bag which fits all your gear in. It is quite easy to walk in to a shop and get an all singing all dancing bag like I did with the Lowepro Vertex 350 (holds 2 bodies, 500mm lens plus flash and another 6 lenses and tripod). Seemed like a great idea.... all my gear in one place, until I tried to lift it! Shortly after this I went out and bought 2 small Lowepro bags, one which fits the camera with lens and one additional and the other fits camera with lens plus 550ex flash and 2 lenses.

I find now that I never use the Vertex and rarely the Fastpack and that I tend to stick with the 2nd smallest bag 90% of the time.

I can only suggest that you identify your needs first - what is essential and what is a 'nice to have'. I thought it would be great to be able to carry my laptop with me so that I can process my images when i'd finished. Thing is I always fill the SD cards and wait until I return home, therefore, I don't really need that function. Likewise, I wanted a bag that could take my Sigma 150-500 lens.... reality is that I don't tend to focus on photography such as wildlife, sporting events, etc.. where I would use that particular lens. As a result I never take it with me, so the conclusion to me is that I don't really have a need for the big 'carry everything bag' unless one day I book a 2 week expedition to the north pole!

Hope this is of some help, i'm not a very experienced photographer but I am trying to share my learnings so that you get things right 1st time without wasting money like I did.

Thanks you pair. Very helpful. As for bringing my laptop, I wouldn't be interested in that, so that helps.

I wouldn't see myself getting more than the 50mm and 55-250 to start. I do quite a lot of motorsport photography. The 18-55 is terrible if your far back from the track.
 
Slight bump.

Can anyone confirm that the 302AW will hold a 55-250? Looking to purchase a bag along with a nifty fifty.
 
Hopefully my bag will arrive tuesday, the 302aw, If you tell me the lens size i can try it out and let you know when it arrives :-)
 
Well I am defo out for a new bag out at the Mathew st festival today put my 18-55 back in the cheap bag that came with it bent over to do so thing and it came flying out of the bag on to the ground ... Seems ok no marks or any thing so I was lucky just shows you need to invest into a good bag
 
Damn, I knew it was a bargain!, its now £49.99 Its arrived and Im sure it would fit the lens, its quite a big bag and my 70-300 vr nikon lens just slips in to one of the pockets. All the dividers can be moved too. I hope the price falls too, typical amazon!
 
I quite fancy a bag that fits on your waist belt. Got the 'Y' standard one for the 50D (Which is too big for it). Would like a better bag.
