hello there

i am about to buy my first camera (digital slr) and was wondering if you could direct me into which is the best 'system' for me..

i will be using it for the following:

birdwatching
airplanes
some landscape
portrait


i dont have alot of money (5-600) initially and dont want to be spending a fortune on lenses all the time.

which will be the best for me. ive been to the local jessops and held quite a few and to be frank they all felt brill.

the chap at jessops told me that olympus would be best as it doubles the reach?

but when i had a look at the olympus the viewfinder was tiny compared to the nikon i looked at.

Airplanes and Birdwatching You need a telephoto lens.
And Landscape you can still use the kit lens or get a Ultra wide angle.
500-600 which I think cannot satisfy all the needs.
You can probably get a second hand DSLR and kit first to play around.
Then upgrade the lens later.

I think you can get a Nikon D60 or Canon 450D first!

yeah, I'd go along with that too. Go for a SH starter DSLR - I'd probably look at D50 or D70 as they have a built in autofocus motor - and then you'll have money left over to start looking around at longer lenses. At the very least you'd be wanting a 70-300 to get you started I'd have thought
 
either of those, it's easier to get the lenses 2nd hand for much cheapness on the two major brands. The sony will normally include image stabilisation though in the body which is nice. Not sure if this is on all models though
a 2nd hand 450D will suit on a budget, but the 500D with more pixels might be nice for wildlife.

prime lens for protraits, nifty 50 and a telephoto, 70-300 are standard.
these don't come very cheaply though, but you can do things on a budget

450D 500 ish quid with the kit lens which isn't bad
nifty fifty for 60-70 quid and another
135 quid for a Brand New Sigma 70-300mm 70-300 f/4-5.6 DG Macro Canon from ebay...
the 70-300 IS is about 350 ish on it's own

then get a decent SD card, cheapy tripod and spare battery and you're away

it might be worth looking at things like this for starting out
 
Not sure on canon prices but here's a suggestion.

Nikon D50 or D70 - Bought £200 with lens (landscape for the lens)
Nikon 50mm f1.8 - think its just over £100 (portrait lens)
Sigma 70-300mm - bought £150 ish I think (telephoto lens for planes and birds)
 
The body will eventually be a relatively small part of the cost of your gear & this is 1 area that the Olympus will fall down on - Olympus make great lenses but some of them are comparitively extremely expensive & unfortunately there aren't many 3rd party manufacturers doing 4/3 mount (just Sigma afaik & then not all).

If looking for new then the Sony A200 is a great vfm DSLR & is fine for birds & aviation.
e.g. A200 c/w kit 18-70mm (£260), Tamron 70-300mm LD (£130), 4GB Sandisk Extreme III Compact Flash card (£20), bag (say £30), lens pen & rocket blower (£10) = £450.
A longer (400mm) lens would be nice but you aren't going to get that in your budget.
