I dont know what I should be looking for or know of any good / bad brands for tripod.

At the moment, I do portaits (people subject), automotive (static) and on it, has a 40D (with battery grip) iwth a 70-200 F/4 IS. I need something fairly light but able to go very low on the floor and also the center support but be able to tilt vertically.

Thanks

I may be a broken record on the subject of tripods but...

Have a look at Benbo and Uniloc.

If you go for one of these it might be an idea to get the additional centre column bracket too as it makes handling easier.

I have a Benbo (with the additional centre column bracket) and I'm able to get it into positions which were impossible with my previous conventional centre column through the legs Manfrotto (055) and as an added bonus it seem to be more stable than the Manfrotto too.

£100? Including a head?

There was a thread here on budget tripods recently.

With £100 you'd better go for a Red Snapper,

With £200 I'd look at Benro Travel angel.

The cheaper ones may not have a tilting centre column and may not be able to get close to the ground.

A used Benbo or Uniloc will be possible at that price, even a new one if it's one of the smaller ones.

Just checked and you can get a new one for about £80.

These came out after I ditched my 055. Does it tilt though or just change from vertical to horizontal?

"Now, by extending the column to its highest vertical position, it can be swung round to horizontal"

This may be worth clarifying. It may be that the centre column is capable of being tilted but reading that it could also be that it has two positions, vertical and horizontal. That may or may not be acceptable depending upon what the user wants, it wouldn't be acceptable to me, but that's just me.
