I'm after an ultra light, ultra portable tripod. It's going to be used for very long trips in quite remote areas, and will be strapped to a backpack that also has everything I need to live in it, so weight and size are very limited.

Needs to hold a 7D, with various lenses, the heaviest probably being a 200mm f2.8L with an extender.

I think you need to specify just what exactly do you mean by ultra light and ultra portable; you'd also need to set a budget range!

If you have a look at the Gitzo GT1542T it would fit what you're looking for. At 16.73" folder-up, weight a mere 2.2 lbs, can mount up to 8kg on it. It's an ideal tripod but priced close to £500 :eek:; and that's without the ballhead.

Budget isn't a huge issue, ultra light and ultra portable means ideally under 1kg, and a packed up length of no more than about 45cm.

That Gitzo looks excellent, I'll definitely be considering it, although I'll need a decent head too.
 
Well then, the Gitzo I mentioned above is just ideal. I've done a lot of research into this, and, like you, wanted something under 1kg. This Gitzo model is the only option that I saw that was reasonable.

Its' height, when folded-up is 42.5cm. I've coupled it with a RRS BH-30 LR II ballhead, which is a mere 7.5cm in height, weighing at just under 370g, and has a load capacity of 6.8KG.

This set-up is perfect for my D700 with the 200-400 f/4 VR II zoom lens, plus any other combination of lens body I may throw at it. Even when the D4 comes out, it will be more than capable to handle that set-up too.
 
Gitzo GT1541T if you can get one as it has a load capacity 1Kg greater than the the latest 1542T and slightly less weight.

IMO there is only one head for this tripos and that is the Markins Q3T which has been designed to fit this tripod when folded. Excellent ball head which will easily hold you maximum lens size without droop.

The above is expensive but is probably the best available option regardless of cost. The tripod is a little over £400 plus another £280 for the Q3T.

I don't want to sound rude, so my apologies if I come-off as such; but my research showed the GT1541 to be at 1.12KG with the same load capacity of the GT1542 :shrug:.

If you're sure about your data on the 1541, then I would say that's the one to go with for sure; but keep in mind, its' folder length is 54cm vs. 42.5cm for the 1542.

Just checked the load capacity for the GT1542, and it is as Paul has stated, to be 7kg vs. 8kg for the GT1541. (sorry Paul, for doubting you, I hope I haven't offended).

So, for an extra 120g in weight, you'd get an extra 1kg in load capacity.

The only issue, then, remains, is the folded height as indicated in my previous post.
 
I've got a gitzo 1541t.

It is light and the folded length is ideal for my bags.

Only real problem is that due to it's lightness it doesn't feel quite as sturdy when on grass as opposed to rock.

I need to save up for the Markins Q3T next. That's the head to go for.

No offence taken or apologies needed. I have just purchased the combination I mentioned and did try and get hold of the 1541 as opposed to the 1542 due to the extra load capacity. The 1542 is a few inches taller which is why it loses the 1Kg of capacity.

Thanks for providing the link Trevor, I was just about to look it up when I saw you had posted, it is where I got mine from. I do believe you can buy direct from Markins in Korea and save a few pounds, I went the safer route :)
