special effects filters?

can anybody share some light on special effects filters?

im interested in trying out some but have no idea where to start.

it turns all the light points in your photograph into start flare with the number of points dictated by the filter - its used alot for jewelery photography

I'm not neccessarily advocating that you buy Cokin filters but this site shows examples of the effects achieved by the various types.
