Hi,

I have a D5000 that's a few weeks old and have noticed there is a dark speck in the viewfinder which (I think!) also appears on my pictures. What is this likely to be? Should I take my camera back or is this likely to be something I can sort out myself? I assume this might be dirt somewhere but have no idea how to find it/get rid of it.

Thanks

Sounds like it's on the sensor :( and if that's the case you might be best to try taking it back and asking for it to be put right (cleaned) FOC. You could of course have caused this by letting something in when the lens was off.

If it was a spot on your sensor there's no way at all that you'd see it in your viewfinder. A spot in your viewfinder is most likely to be on the focusing screen itself and it's almost inevitable that you'll get dust on the screen eventually. Personally I wouildn't worry about it as it wont appear in your images, although you could try a blower brush to dislodge it ot even remove the screen to clean it assuming your focusing screen is user replaceable.

If you are getting a spot on your actual images, then that will be on the sensor, so it looks like two separate issues, both of which are to expected in normal usage and not at all unusual. The sensor is easily cleaned by any of several methods.

Get yourself a rocket blower, I've had a speck on my sensor of my very new D300. It's a simple job to do, there's plenty of tutorials on youtube. It's also handy to make sure the rear of your lens is dust free before putting it on to your body.

Thanks for the tips, i'll get a blowr tomorrow and if it's still there after that i guess i'll take it back to get it looked at.
