Speed Booster type thingies...

My guess is that the loss of AF, degradation of IQ and reduction of focal range will far outweigh any benefits experienced through the gain of one stop. Seems about as useful as one of those plastic tube and pump kits used for growing willies:).
 
I think that the reduction of focal length is actually one of the big plus points.

These things would potentially be great when used with CSC's and legacy lenses. At the moment wide legacy lenses are like hens teeth and expensive and when used on a CSC there's the crop factor of your smaller frame body to consider.

For example, a 28mm lens, which would be a wide angle on it's original 35mm film camera, becomes an equivalent 56mm on a Panasonic or Olympus MFT CSC or 42mm on a Fuji or Sony CSC.

With one of these new gizmos the x0.7 (varies depending on which gizmo it is) factor goes some way to restoring the crop factor and gives you a wider view.

As the reviews say, centre sharpness is there but it's not so good towards the edges, even so for some shots I can see one of these things coming in useful.
 
the first speedbooster that was canon lens on nex had autofocus, it was just slow
gaining some extra T stop is interesting too for low light stuff
 
I hadn't seen that link so thanks, I'll read it later but a quick scan tells me that it results in a wider image than I'd thought and I think that in real world images if you can avoid pixel peeping the image quality may be good enough for many people / some shooting situations / shots.

I would be interested if there was a good adapter for my lenses.

They seem to be raving about the Metabones on DPreview, and TBH I was surprised by the optical quality.

Where I think it will struggle is the cost. Unless it drops considerably from the £400-ish at present, surely most people would just buy a new lens?

The main advantage that I personally see is not light gathering or DoF but the effective focal length reduction for legacy lenses when used on CSC's.

Wide angle legacy options can be expensive and there really isn't too much available below something like 24mm and even 24mm is getting expensive and if going down that route £400 for this gizmo doesn't seem too bad to me especially as you can use it with multiple lenses and it'll give each lens a dual use as you could attach the booster or a standard converter depending on what you want to achieve. A cheapo 28mm could then potentially give you two FoV's depending on if you attach it via the booster or a standard adapter.

I'd consider buying one.
