Speedlight is Nikon's brand name for their flash units.

Flashlight is American English for a hand-held electric torch. :)

he said flash light not flesh light lol get your mind out the gutter

Ok... now back to the topic...

I think the OP means the difference between a speedlight, a flashgun, and a strobe.

Basically they are all pretty much the same thing (flash devices, usually hotshoe mounted)... and the difference is just a brand name or nationality thing.

I personally call them flashguns, but strobe is an americanism, and speedlight is a Nikon thing... So there you have it. I say tomato... etc. The same thing as some people calling them vacuum cleaners and some calling them hoovers.

i own one of them

You've got your very own Les Dawson?

A rare model these days. Terry Wogans are a bit easier to get hold of, as they're still in production, sort of... though I understand that version was supposed to be retired last year.

I have to admit to still calling them flashlights, having been back in the UK for just over 3 years now.

Let me tell you how I see it
In the past it was a Flash gun or Flash head, also some called Hammer head.
The name speedlight (Nikon)or speedlite (Canon) are brand names for Flash heads or Flash guns.
Flashlight is a USA word for torch, also a term used in the theater but well leave it at that for now
