Spend my £500.

Your probably sick to death of newbies coming on here asking what dslr to buy, so here's a different approach.

Take £500 (virtual quid) and buy some kit. You'll need to buy a half decent body (any make) and at least one lens. Smaller bodies appreciated, but not critical. Only requirements is that the camera should have some sort of remote/cable shutter release, and have a bulb setting.

Max budget £500 but don't feel you need to blow it all.

:)

What you buying?

Well, my first question would be, what do you want it for? Wildlife, portrait, general use, sports, etc? You catch my drift.

Arty type shots and travel, so light, small as possible and tough. Micro four thirds would be good, but Im not sure about them (that's another thread).

:)

You'd have much more fun if you blew the 500 quid on Coke (Coke is it!) and ladies of dubious virtue (who are known for a liking of a nice glass of Coca-Cola)

:D

This was my budget when I purchased my camera.

I came home with the Sony A300, I was caught up between the Nikon vs Canon arguement between friends so thought I'd go straight down the middle to Sony.

I must say that I have no regrets. I am more than happy with it.

I went to Jessops in the Trafford Centre with an idea of what I wanted and I had the £500 cash in my pocket. I had a look round then went over to the assistant and explained that I had £500 in my pocket and wanted a setup of camera with kit lens, an additional lens and bag etc etc.

I came home with:

Sony A300 with 18-70mm kit lens
55-200mm f/4 - f/5.6
A nice little bag to fit it all in.
4GB CF Card

It came to £540 so they did me a deal and I walked away a happy man.

Depending on what you plan to shoot, looking back now I would replace the 55-200 for a 50mm f/1.8. It's a little bit cheaper than the 55-200mm too. No photographers bag is complete without a nifty.

Which reminds me of something a friend says about money:

"I would spend half of it on beer and women... and waste the rest".

(p.s. My links work for me).

Steve.

Steve's links work for me too.
I would suggest a very similar idea to his but would point towards MIFSUDS as well.

As for what kit I would be looking at while there, I would go for D70 (£199), 18-70 (£179)70-300G (£79). You might even be able to persuade them to chuck in an ML-L3 remote but they're not too expensive anyway (£19.99, new {cheaper from Warehouse Express})

got to agree on the sony a300 as a great starter as a dslr. 10mega pixels, inbuilt image stabilisation with the added bonus of live view

tempted to sell mine for a nikon d90 though (still umming and argning over it),
but someone could have a sony a300 and sony 18-200 for 500 notes from me ;-)
