Still learning macro so if anyone has any tips on how to nail focus or get sharper images...

Looks like you are nailing the focus, especially on the eyes on the second shot. You need to make sure you are using as large an aperture number as possible (ie f22) as this will maximise your depth of field. You also need light. I can not stress enough what a difference flash will make to your macro shots.

hi, thanks for your comments. I find that the image comes out too under exposed when i go down past f8.

im using a macro ringflash but it was taken in the shade. maybe i need to up the iso, i usually have it set to 100

Yes, upping the ISO should allow you to stop down the aperture for more DOF.
