Spiderpro Dual holster ...knock off

I have ordered one so will let you know how I get on with it. I've been toying with the idea of the Spider Pro for a while but just couldn't quite stomach the asking price. This is from someone who has used the a Quickstrap double harness for a couple of years now instead of the Black Rapid for similar reasons.

From the photos it certainly looks good. It even has the metal plate where you can adjust the screw rather than like the B Grip I stupidly bought which is useless for an event photographer. It's fine for casual use though.

I know what you mean. I have been using a £10 double harness thing. Seems Ok although i constantly check it for wear and tear. The problem is when wanting to get low down it takes a while to remove the camera otherwise it bashes on the floor. I like the spider system idea for ease of taking the camera off and placing it on the floor.

Its the first non spider / spider system i have seen. Keep me posted.

I've thought about one of these but I'm not sure it would be a good idea with my 70-200 and my short legs.

Here you go http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/plasterin...aultDomain_3&hash=item2a3dfc8d7d#ht_44wt_1107

Should be able to also get some good aerial shots lol!!

I have seen equally good reviews of the spider system vs the holdfast leather system. I guess I wont know until i try it. For £69 i didnt think it was too bad...

quality..... thats how im shooting my next wedding....nice and Inconspicuous...

i have a similer system but its just the mount and not the belt bit, never got round to using it, but its well made and feels solid, the lock system isnt as good the spider pro, but otherwise its near identical

I have a friend (working pro/weddings/events) who uses one... He's had it for a bit over 1 yr and is happy with it. He got it after I started using the Spider system.

TBH, I'm not sure they're "knockoffs"/copies but more "unbranded." (i.e. made by the same manufacturer)

i have heard of that...same factory, same design, no branding.

I'd be interested in this. I have a cheaper version of the black rapid dual harness but didn;t like it swinging around. I was looking at the spider pro dual belt, but again, didnt want to spend the money. Be interesting to see what gadgeteer thinks.

Although they look a little more cumbersome to clip in and out due to their safety mech I do think the B Grip system looks a lot more trustworthy.

I've got the B Grip. The biggest problem with the B Grip is the fact when you 'holster' the camera the camera points downwards meaning if you have a flash attached it points outwards. If you see what I mean. So it's fine if I'm out on a day out with friends & family or hiking like in all the ads. But it's practically useless if you are a wedding tog with a flash attached. Add a wireless trigger and you just look like a total idiot lol

The spider avoids this by pointing the lens backwards so the flash points downwards instead. Meaning you still stand a chance of getting through a doorway :)

Wow that thing looks bulky... I'd get the Capture Clip instead.

I've been using the Spider Holsters for ~ 3yrs now with no issues. I use CarrySpeed straps which can attach to the spider pins (I use the "xtreme" strap for heavier gear). I use the CarrySpeed folding plates (Arca swiss plate w/ pin that folds out of the way); and the Spider holster can accept the CarrySpeed pin. I did have to slightly sand down the ball on one version of the pin for cross compatibility...can't remember which one though.

i thought the spider holster unit was an all in one jobby.... what does that cost all in for a 2 camera system then?

It costs more than I'd like to admit... it was a gradual slide to where I am now... The systems are "stand alone" so I wound up with unused spider plates.
I have a single holster belt and two stand alone clips that I attach to bag belts (I.e. Think Tank Speed Racer V1). Each clip comes with a plate, but I don't like them as much ($105 clip/plate, $135 single belt). CarrySpeed straps (at least some) also come with the FS-1 (folding arca compatible plate w/ pin) at ~$100ea here in the USA (since BlackRapid got a patent and started suing everyone).

ahhh...i see. I guess for me the key thing is cost sadly. I would love to be able to spend the cash on something like this or a spider or a holdfast moneymaker but i need to spend the cash on glass and try and save on the luxuries....(although some would see this as a necessity) so for the £69 i could suffer a bit of bulkiness lol. I would be keen to see what gadgeteer reckons, although i may just take a punt....

If your doing weddings week in week out you'll soon see a strap system (I use the hold fast) as a requirement. Both for your neck/back and for easy of use and freedom of movement.

That's why I combine the strap and holster systems. NOTHING takes the weight off your shoulders like moving it to your hips does. As often as not I use the camera without a strap at all...

Thats where i want to get to. Even with a dual harness, the weight is is still on the shoulders and when leaning forward or crouching the cameras dangle and swing / clink. With the holster it appears to be a simple click and you can lay the camera down and / or place on a table etc.

And the weight is on the hips. I would still use a strap loosely over the shoulder as im sure i would occasionally miss the clip and let go of the camera lol!!!

Screw it, I've bought it! :D

Has anyone actually tried these with a long lens attached? I am curious as moving the weight of 2 cameras to the hips seems like a really good idea but the length of the 70-200 with the hood attached is quite significant and I'd worry about bashing it on the ground while I was using the other body.

haha...i was just on ebay hovering over the buy button lol
whats the delivery time?
It says between 20th of June and 4th of July

You can remove the pin from the plate, (or get an extra pin; the CarrySpeed version is nicer IMO) and mount it to the lens foot. The camera then hangs "flat."

I use a Hold Fast MM with a 1DX one side & 6D on the other. Bodies coupled with a 70-200 f/2.8 MkII & 300 f/4. Heavy? Yes. BUT got to say no pressure on my neck. All the weight around shoulders and hips. Really comfortable and although this brand expensive worth every penny for me.

OK, my order arrived this morning and I've had a quick play. Not yet battle tested it but I do have a wedding tomorrow so will field test it then. I've put together my first impressions on this carbon copy of the Spider Pro holster in case anyone is thinking about ordering one too. I'll update you all in a few days with how I got on

Looks like my old work belt - killed everyone's lower back.

My order arrived the other day. Looks like some good quality stuff! Will be testing it out at a wedding on the 28th.

Although looking at your photos in the blog. My box arrived in the same condition that yours did by the looks.

I've only used it out and about. Not for an actual assignment yet. My only down point so far is that once you put the camera in the holster, you do have to pull a release switch before you can pull the camera out, meaning you have to use two hands all the time. Whereas with the spider pro system, you can lock the safety with open.

That's the main thing for me too. Having to pull the switch is a big downside and slows me down. As a result it felt slower to use than a harness.

If I take that out of the equation then I don't think there's a big difference between the holster and the dual harness. There are a couple of advantages like for example I can easily take the cameras out and rest them if I want to sit down whereas on the harness I have to unlock the carabiners to take the cameras off.

I was a bit worried about the belt taking the strain of dual cameras and flash all day but it performed well in that regard. The day after a wedding usually my shoulders are tired and I can feel them but this time i feel great. I can totally understand why anyone who suffers from back pain would prefer the holster system. It's not a big deal for me since I don't get back pain (yet).

But yes....the release switch being on all the time is the biggest drawback. I'm not sure you even really need them given when the camera is facing downwards there's no way you can get the camera out without turning the camera 90 degrees up.

cool, is there a way of fudging the release. could it be taped open with some decent gaffa tape? I wonder why they left that off....

Yeah funnily enough I was just having a mess about and there's quite an easy way I've found so far. A small lump of (white) blue tack. The advantage is you can easily take it out if I do need it to lock and plan to go for a jog or something. The disadvantage is it looks a bit kack :ROFLMAO:

I'm looking at a way of locking it open. I figured if I brought it in to work I can challenge all the engineers to doing it for me!

You can easily permanently disable the lock... the mechanism is easy to access from the back. But I'm not sure I would do that...
The OEM version has a little spring/ball that holds the mechanism open... maybe it's just "missing" and could be added.

Thats what I meant, try and engineer a mechanism to keep it open when wanted.
