Spoilt for choice

Guys,

Just been into Currys and had a quick play with a D700 (only went in to look at tumble dryers but the pull of the cam display was just too strong )

I was virtually set on buying a 5d mark ii to complement my classic for some weddings next year but having read a few threads on here lately got me thinking about a switch to Nikon mainly for the better AF and marginally better higher iso results (again, from what I've read). I only have a few lenses so making the change wouldn't really be an issue.

What I'm trying to gauge is, from those that have made the switch, is :

a) is the performance of one way better than the other in practice ?
b) is it a steep learning curve ?
c) am I being an ar*e and should just make do with what I have ?

I have no great brand loyalty to either, I just thought i'd seek some views before I finally decide. I also have no intention of waiting for a D800 or 5Diii (or whatever they'll be named) as I'm not gonna shell out for the latest and greatest. Either of the above will do me nicely. I might also add that I like the size and general feel of both so that doesn't really have a bearing.

Anyway, here's my 2p:

Go with what feels right. One can nitpick about performance as much as one likes, but at the end of the day the 5DMkII as well as the D700 are fantastic cameras, so a lot of the choice - I think - is about picking it up and feeling happy and comfortable about the handling.

I've never properly switched - been with Nikon for all things DSLR - but I do have a Canon G12 and it confuses me (however, I still love it). But then, I really don't use it as much as I use my DSLRs, so I can't speak of a steep learning curve since I just haven't invested the necessary time to get familiar with it.
How quickly did you grow into your first Canon? It'll probably take a bit less than that cause by now you're probably more experienced with photography as a whole (I was quite a noob upon picking up my first SLR). But it is a bit of a change. I'd say it's worth it, but that's because I adore the D700 and am dreadfully unfamiliar with its competitors.

Just looked at your camera bag and you have a 5Dc and a 40D but you haven't listed any lenses. If you're looking for a camera with full frame, great IQ and features then you cant go wrong with a 5DMkII. The AF isn't the fastest but it will more than keep up with the guests at a wedding. Also, if you have some lenses to go with it already thats a bonus. The 5Dc is a great camera but put it next to a MkII for comparison and there is a big difference in technology. Best idea is to have a play with both of them and see which you prefer.
I've only had experience with Canon but have a close friend that shoots Nikon and after having a play with my 7D he was adding up second hand prices for his kit to see what lenses he could get with a 7D and he's been using Nikon for years.
