In the evening yesterday, I had a session with the local
photo club. The theme was not the moon as celestial
object but as theatrical subject.

The conditions were pretty good: bright sunset and
cloud free horizon, cool evening with local overhead
opened cloud cover.

Some 27 people were attending the session and the
results, of course, varied immensely as did the gears
and the skills. Since I was shooting tethered to a trusty
MacBook 17" and a cinema display, everyone could
see the results of different approaches and understand
them I hope. C&C welcomed!

Doesn't quite work for me. The clouds are too indistinct, even in the second shot and seem to just be blocking the Moon rather than adding much spookiness. Maybe some branches in silhouette would have helped. The exposure seems a bit high - looking back at shots of the Moon (as a celestial object rather than a theatrical subject!), I see that spot metering from its surface gives me 1/400th @ f/11 when using ISO 800, 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 stops different to your settings.
