These look similar to common redshanks apart from during the summer when they turn almost black. There are small differences though, they tend to be slimmer, longer bill with a slight downturn at the end and the red on the bill is restricted to the lower mandible.

I'd love to see them in their breeding plumage but I'm not sure where they breed. Not here, presumably?


not sure if they actually breed on Brownsea but I have seen them there during the summer in the past
