spotting scopes

Have been thinking about this can the spotting scopes used for birdwatching be converted to fit a camera lens ? Sorry if it seems a stupid question

'Digi-scoping' is popular. You attach a compact camera to the back of a spotting scope with a simple adapter. Tons of 'reach' but quality is not up to a proper lens and camera.

There's no cheap or easy way to do really long lens photography well.
