Thanks everyone! I got 2 of the jacobs ND filters from ebay. But it seem to make sence to pay more for a 10 stopper.
I could be way off the mark and it's been a while since I messed about with multiple filters but from memory:
ND4 = 2 stop / 25% (0.6 density)
ND8 = 3 stop / 12.5% (0.9 density)
So 2 X ND4 does not = ND8
One ND4 = 25% light = 2 stop
Add a 2nd ND4 on top = 25% of 25% = 6.25%. = ND16 = 4 stop
Add a 3rd ND4 then it's 25% of 6.25% = 1.5625% = ND64 = 6 stop
Add a 4th ND4 then it's 25% of 1.5625% = 0.391% which is ND256 = 8 stop
Stacking like that - you might be better off investing in individual ND filters rather than having 4 the same.
I think different manufacturers do adopt some different naming conventions.
