Stacking teleconverters

I know this is a bit off the wall, but has anyone ever tried using both the Nikon 1.7x and 1.4x teleconverters at the same time?

I have a 300mm F2.8VR and a 1.7x TC - the IQ is virtually indistinguishable from the lens without the TC, so I got thinking :

1. Is it POSSIBLE to stack the 1.7 and 1.4 TC's on the same lens?; and
2. Does the IQ degrade considerably, or would it be tolerable?

Any views / experience?

Cheers
Pete

dont know for Nikon, but i know for canon, you can stack my Jessops one with another one. Image quality is pap thought :( but thats the jessops one.

Pete, it will degrade, every extra bit of glass has an impact, but it will also slow down the AF considerably.

Here is an example for you, the Loop usual weather, overcast, the Eagles are there with lots of vapor, as the vapor goes full bloom over the wings,.... just the 1.4TC slows the AF to much to keep up, for consistent shots, and this is like yourself using the Nikon 300mm F/2.8 VR. just my experience.

If you want to try this in the Loop, I always have my Nikon 1.4tc with me, so you're welcome to try it.

Another option to condider,........... D300 best 1.5TC out there, with no loss of AF speed.

Martin :)

Cheers Martin might just take you up on that. BTW - when are you next planning to visit Cad West?

Yes I know - but I sold mine to buy my D700 - :cuckoo:
Might just have to get me another one !

Pete,.......... weather dependant, I'll be out in the loop all next week :), bar Monday.

Martin.

I don't think the Nikon TCs will stack by default. You can get it to work, but you will need to grind down a metal tab on the TC. You'll also loose AF and the IQ will be degraded. Other than than, yes it is possible. :)
