Hi peeps

I have a Siggy 17-70mm on my 7d and i love the Macro(esque) close up magnification but id like a decent quality zoom with a fixed 2.8 aperture across the zoom range and also retain a reasonable close up magnification to save me swapping to my 100mm macro if i dont need full 1:1.

I have a 24-70L that sits on my 5dMkII that i could swap out onto the 7d to get reasonable close up mag ratio but id rather buy another lens for the 7d with similar 1:2.3 ratio of the Siggy and wider than the 24-70 for the cropper if poss.

Any suggestions peeps, is there such a lens with decent build/AF plus 2.8 fixed?

Simple answer: No.

Not so simple answer: If I've understood correctly, you want a lens which is:
- a zoom
- constant f/2.8 throughout
- compatible with your 5D Mk II
- wider than 24mm

There's exactly one lens which meets all those requirements: the EF 16-35 mm f/2.8 L. But being only 35mm at the long end it's not really any good for close-up stuff.

If you're willing to relax some of your requirements then there might be a solution.

It doesn't have to be compatible with the FF just the 7d as I have the 24-70l for the 5d.
The sigma 17-70's close focus is so blinking handy as I often do mag shots or live stock shots for products of reef aquaria.The down side is that light isn't always great over some tanks and flash kills the vivid colour so the 17-70 falls flat at the long end with regards to aperture.
I might just buy a 24-105 for the 5d and wack the 24-70 on the 7d as it doesn't sound as if the lens I want actually exists.

That looks interesting, the mag ratio is a bit poor at 1:4.5 otherwise it could have been just the lens I was looking for. Incidentally I did own a canon 17-55 for a while and whilst it was a stonking little lens I went back to 17-70 as for the most part I need to frame fish as small as 2" at close quarters (20-40cm) . Whilst the 100mm macro will do the job I have to either swap lenses or bodies if I'm in a confined space to get wider shots.
Bit of an odd shoot so not easy to find a zoom to suit the application, the 24-70L manages 1:3.4 at mfd I think so not sure if there's anything as useful as the 17-70 at the mo.

I've got the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 ex dc macro, and it's a great lens. Really sharp from f4.
