Standard lens for canon slr

I use a 50D and 40D. I use canon 100mm macro, canon 100 - 400, and sigma 10-20.
I'm missing a decent "standard" lens just for general shooting. Any ideas welcome
 
Tamron 17-50mm f2.8, Sigma 18-50mm f2.8, Canon 17-55mm f2.8. Or, if you prefer primes, Sigma 30mm f1.4.

There's the 17-85 which was the kit lens with this bodies, the newer 15-85 seems to get very good reviews. Then there's the 17-55 and 24-105

Suppose it depends on budget and needs from the lens - do you want IS, constant F stop, fast lens etc.

You've then the Tamron 17-50 lens and others. What is your focal length needs - do you want a wider lens (17-55) or a longer lens (24-105).
 
The 17-85mm isn't very good IMVHO. Optically I think it's rather average, with perhaps more CA and deffo much more distortion than you'd expect, but at least the zoom range, IS and USM are nice. I couldn't in good conscience recommend the lens though :thumbsdown:

+1 for the Sigma 30mm f/1.4

It's my standard walkabout/everyday lens on my 40D.

The 17-85IS is OK with good light and I'll use it for off-camera flash portraiture, but it's a mediocre walkabout lens.

I don't necessarily need a fast lens but have found IS useful in the ones I have. Budget not a great problem. There see to be such variation in the reviews. I don't see the point in compromising on quality. I have used sigma 18-125 3.5-5.6, but found it produced very soft images.

I'd be looking at the 17-55IS or the 25-105IS then. I've had a 28-135 IS previously and for me was a great focal range, so if I was choosing then I'd prob opt for the 24-105 as you have the 10-20mm covered.

The 15-85 is worth a look at if you want a wider lens than the 24-105, but a longer range than the 17-55.

What 1 person likes and raves about, another doesn't, it is very much a personal choice and if you can, I'd recommend trying them out.

Thanks andyred. Really useful. I was heading towards the 24- 105. Will see if I can get hold of one to try
 
I thought a standard lens was one that matched the diagonal of the sensor/film
canon 28mm f1.8
I have the sigma 30mm version for f1.4 low light malarkey

general stuff, the new sigma 18-250 OS HSM macro would be on my shopping list
or a nice 17-55 f2.8 from tamron, canon or sigm

L glass is even nicer, 24-105 cracking lens, but not that wide on a cropped body and quite heavy
