Hello All!!

I have had a DSLR for 2-3 years now and have only really used it like a normal portable camera but thankfully i dont seem to be working 7 days a week anymore and i am finding more time on my hands to be able to take this up as more of a hobby, i have a Sony Alpha a390 with 18-70 and a 70-300 lenses.

I dont have any preferences to what i like taking pictures of, if it looks like i can get an amazing image or even attempt to, ill take it!!

Obviously i am no professsional but i have joined up to learn more about the techinics and equipment i can use. I have also been studying images other people have been taking and i have found i would like to start of learning more about portrait and close-up detailed images with blury backgrounds etc.

So any helpful information/tips will be very much appriciated :)

Luke.

Take a few pics, post them on here with the exif data, ask for critique, and questions like why isn't the bg blurry in this? or what ever and peeps will be glad to add advice. In the meantime, read the tutorials on here...Some good ones foe basics are there.

Also youtube is good, watch a few Bryan Peterson vids, he seems a nice fella.

Edit: Welcon to TP btw.

Thank you, i have been using youtube and it has proven to be very helpful so far :) can never learn to much from the professionals.

Hello LukeB and welcome.

Good suggestions from On the Huh.

Also have a look at the tutorials on Cambridge in Colour -

http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/

The two most important things to learn are

aperture, shutter speed and ISO, and how they relate to each other, and

composition.

But just take lots and lots of photos and try to work out why some are good and some are not.

The "good or not" can be -

is the photo too dark/light?
is the subject (or the whole photo) out of focus?
is there something in the photo that distracts from the subject, for example a pole growing out of someone's head.

If you are not sure just post them up here and folks will try to help.

Dave

Excellent thank you. I shall have a look at cambridge in colour, just from clicking on it, it looks like a site that could answer quite a few questions.
