Starter DSLR - 450D or 1100D

I'm just looking to start out with DSLR photography and trying to work out which body to go for. I am want to go with Canon for a number of reasons.
Money wise the 450D and 1100D look to be around the same sort of number at the moment.

While the 1100D is the new "starter model" it looks to include many of the features of the higher range 450D but its obviously much older now.

I would probably end up going for a 2nd hand 450D if I can.

Would people recommend the 450D or 1100D?

I am looking to do various photography from landscape to taking it away when we go snowboarding to some macro flower/object photograpy.

Both cameras will fulfill your requirements as far as picture taking is concerned. However with a new 1100D body coming in at around the same price range as a used 450D I think the choice is obvious. I have owned the 450D and it was a great little camera but the 1100D is a newer model with newer tech.
A much improved Digic 4 processor that can take 14bit RAW files (the 450D does 14bit RAW as well but on the older DigicIII processor),
Newer and better 63-zone iFCL exposure metering
Higher ISO range up to 6400 ! (though no one would recommend shooting at that high an ISO it could at tims be the difference between getting a nosiy shot as opposed to no shot at all)
Oh! and it shoots HD video and rather well at that.
Top that off with a full 12 month Canon warranty and the choice to me would be obvious.

The 1100D has a smaller rear LCD btw 2.7" as opposed to 3" but that wouldn't me much in my decision making.
They both employ 230,000 pixel dots per screen anyway so the smaller size of the 1100D screen will make the image look much sharper and crisper when reviewing.

After lots of thinking I ended up going for a 500D refurb from Canon i.e. with full years warranty. Its turned up and looks perfect. Can't see anything wrong with it so its all good.

To finish off the starter kit I also went for a 55-250 IS II lens and a couple of UV and Polarising filters.
