Hi,
Have found out today that I am likely to lose my job in the next 2 years. People have commented to me in the past at how good some of my snaps with a regular camera are - this is something I am now thinking of learning to potentially do to plug the financial gap I can see looming in a few years time!
So, to start with I know I need to upgrade my camera from a regular little point and shoot to an SLR. Which would you recommend to start with? Do you think I need to do a course, if so which? Get experience? What comes first and any tips gratefully received!
Thanks

I'd suggest starting with a Canon 450d and grabbing some local training to get you using it to full effect.
The world is totally awash with both digital images and well equipped (with hardware) photographers and to make a living from photography has never been harder.

Ok, will have a look at the Canon 450d. Thank you.
Am just giving it a try as if I can make something out of it then I am happy to supplement it with a part time job elsewhere. Just need to ease the pressure on me in a few years time so am trying to be organised! If I dont try I'll end up in a sad job I dont even want. I'll still love photography, even if it doesnt come to anything. But am really at the beginner end of the spectrum at the moment!

As with all the 'what camera' threads, set a budget (including lens(es) if DSLR, research the cameras in your budget, compare the reviews for those cameras with the type of pics you like to take. A sports photographer may want a different camera to a landscape photographer for example. ;) Once you have a few prospective cameras to choose from, go to a shop and see if you can have a play and try them out. You will have to live with the camera for awhile so make sure it feels comfortable, and the menus if not logical, at least understandable. Then buy. ;)
