Here's a novel suggestion.....books etc for your course and day-to-day living expenses

Yeah I'd save what you have and use the grant towards living!

Unless the grant has to be spent on photography stuff.

In that case:
Canon 5D MK2
Canon 17-40
Canon 24-70
Canon 70-200 f/4 IS
Canon 580ex2
Bits and bobs like memory cards, batteries, bag, etc.

what is it you intend to study?

-also the old "norm" for students at the glasgow school of art was to drink away their entire student load/grant within the the first week of term:puke:

Didn't believe it until I met the head of the student's union by chance and asked him!

perhaps this would be a good choice on what to spend your money on:lol:

But nah, get a nice camera! or something related to your studys thats expensive (if its not photography).

or a holiday for you and your loved ones?:D

Insurance for your expensive kit....boring but essential...

Have a good look at your course material before spending a bean. You might need a film camera or some lights but do look at the course first and take advice from others who have done it. Books will be pretty much a necessity too. :)

you go for it!

Which course are you starting? I agree with AliB - read the course material and there's always the possibility of film cameras like a Hasselblad or Mamiya etc. I bought a dslr just before I began my degree - it certainly came in useful but my main expenditures have been on film, a LF and MF camera and the processing / dark room paper etc and then there's the iMac. . . .

Have fun spending if you get it!

yeah ali they did say i would do a lot with how ever they did say they have all the equipment i would need but they would recomend i have my own stuff that i would use more i got a interview 3rd week in june to discuss everything so im thinking i wait for that first

Prioritise your lenses over the camera. The lenses will be good for years to come, long after the camera has become outdated and superseded several times.

my friend spent a grand on a camera for his daughter for a college course, turns out the college has all its own gear, so now her camera gear sits at home doing nothing. and hes not even in to photography so white elephant:cuckoo:

Think I'll become a student, some grant good lick with whatever you get

The princes trust grant is up to £500. I can't conceive them handing out £5K for equipment for any higher education course - it's just not needed.

Shaun,
Well done and good luck mate:thumbs:
Hope you enjoy the course,:woot:
