Based on these two photos should i keep or part with this old 75-300 lens. Photos straight out of camera

Looking at these photos I'd definitely keep it. Don't know if it's the same model as the one I had (75-300 MkIII, no IS or USM), mine was probably the worst lens I've ever used and I don't have a single keeper taken with it. The flower petals look well spaced and clear, and the colours of both pics are clean and clear. Mine had awful fringing and gave a halo effect around the main subject in focus and half the time the pic looked like it had been taken through a thin layer of vaseline. Seriously bad!

Those photos don't look bad at all, but then at that size all lenses look ok.

I don't think you can judge a lens on two photos - its possible to get good photos with almost any lens in good light and its whether it performs in difficult conditions that sets apart the good and bad I think.

I will say the bokeh is rather nervous in no.2 though.

It's the same one I have to put a rubber band around it as it's that lose it has lens creep :bang:

Your right about that the only thing is I only seem to get the camera out then the whether is nice.
When you say "at that size" do you mean the photo size now at 1024px and if it was 5000px it would not be as sharp

I will say the bokeh is rather nervous in no.2 though.

I thing the bokeh is more down to me doing it wrong maybe F4 1/800 would have been better, If thats right

Pics are nice and sharp (even looking at them on Flickr enlarged).

I would say keeper unless you intend to spend a lot more £s to replace it.

I was looking at the EFS 55-250 IS lens to go with the Tamron 17-50 vc.
But then maybe keep the EF 70-300 to go with the x2 teleconverter on bright days for bird shots in the garden
