I made a bit of an idiot of myself today.

I have recently acquired an EF 24-105 F4L lens but for a number of reasons have not had a chance to try it out much. It is to replace my EF-S 15-85 lens as I need that bit longer length. Anyway I thought I'd try a direct comparison of the two lenses by setting them up on a tripod in turn, photographing a distant vista then taking 100% crops from each and comparing.

I was astounded! the 15-85 appeared to knock spots of the L. After trying various focal lengths and apertures, I called the supplier to tell them I would be sending it back. They were excellent about it and they made arrangements to collect it.

Having glugged a couple of mugs of tea to calm my nerves and to ponder further this heresy, I picked up my camera still with the "offending" lens attached. Then I noticed my gaff. I had left on the IS whilst on the tripod. I've done this before with other lenses and not noticed a deal of degradation, but I repeated the comparison tests. It was a transformation! All crispy sharpness and glorious colours. I've never noticed this effect so much before with any other lens and I now wonder if some poor reviews of the 24-105 have been as a result of a similar mistake.

Then I had to call my supplier to cancel the return ... :whistling::exit:

By the way, the 15-85 is not a bad lens at all!

Hey Bob, glad you made yourself a "idiot today". Harshly termed I think, but thanks for the heads up on the IS on the lens. I've got one arriving friday and thinking of you will remind me to turn my IS off before wanting to send mine back. Cant wait to try it now.

Sorry to be dim, why does the IS degrade pics taken on a tripod, i really dont know??

because the is mechanism tries to work but it just blurs the image since the camera does not move

Enjoy it. Let us know how you get on.

PS. Are you going to the Lincoln Photo and Optic Show tomorrow?

Thanks for that POAH, Ive learnt something today, they say if you learn one thing a day your doing ok :o)

Yep...made a very similar mistake when taking some ebay product shots with my D7000 and 18-105mm VR kit lens.

I just couldn't get them as sharp as I wanted/needed and I knew the lens was capable of. I posted on here in a bit of a panic and someone asked if I'd turned VR off as I was using a tripod.

Looked at the lens...nope, I hadn't! Once I did the difference was astounding!

Needless to say I felt a bit of a tit :)

Yes Bob, will be going with the mrs to have a look around. Gotta go early though cause I've got to be back in time to pick the kids up from school. Maybe see you there.
