Step down rings problematic?

My main lens in now 77mm and my very expensife slim Polarizing filter is 72mm. Shall i buy a step down ring or do i have to change it all up?

That seems quite a lot to step down, wont you see it in shot?

If you're not sure maybe you could hold it in place or mask it off to check before spending any money?

i think most people use step down rings the opposite way e.g. a 77mm filter on a 72mm lens. I would have thought you will see the filter in shot why not get some blutack or similar and see if it shows up.

if it does see if you can swap it on here for a 77mm one?

I wouldn't use it - wide end and narrow apertures and I think you'll see it.

You've got a decent bit of glass, spend the money on the 77mm.

nope it won't work, you can use rings if the filter is too large (but lose the hood) not the other way around

That's called a stepping-up ring isn't it?

If its a crop format camera you might get away with it. Give it a try!

I assume if you step down too much so that you can see the filter then you'll get vignetting round your images at the wider end. It only cost a few pound to get a step down filter off ebay so I suppose it'll be worth a try before having to buy a new filter.
